PLEASE don't disable the Firewall.

Not running any Torrents, P2P or similar.

Internet-connected devices on the network: 4 PCs, iPad, iPod touch, couple of smartphones, a Bluray player and a WDTV box, plus a skype phone. I don't think the number of connections is the problem...

Regarding the firewall. My thought was to drop the firewall, set up a DMZ host, and attach a 2nd router to this, then attach all the network devices to that. Lighten the load on the Genius as much as possible. I have a Dlink wireless router but it can't to VLAN tagging on the WAN side else I'd try putting that straight on the ONT.

Again, DO NOT disable the firewall. Doing so opens up the Genius DNS server to be used in DNS amplification attacks. This is Very Bad.

We'll need to do some testing on this but I'd be surprised if it's a widespread issue as it's the first we've heard of it. I'll let you know soon.

Hmmm makes sense.

I have noticed that when the error occurs, connection to the DNS servers is unavailable. I had the idea to try overriding the DHCP-assigned settings on one of the PCs in the network next time it happens, to the Google public DNS servers (4.4.4.4 and 8.8.4.4 from memory - need to check)

This might prove interesting.

Your thread, nor your ticket, mention anything about facebook photo uploads causing the Genius to crash. So I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. It also appears that replacing your router solved the problem, at least according to the ticket. Indicating a faulty router rather than a problem affecting all routers.

I know you had a frustrating experience and that is unfortunate. But continually pointing to the issues you had, and therefore implying that the Genius as a product is rubbish does not help solve the OP's problem.

The fact that we have over 20k of these out there and working fine is testament to the fact that the product is not inherently flawed. I have one at home and use the internet pretty heavily, and also have no cause for complaint about the router.

So please, and with all due respect, unless you are going to contribute to a solution for the OP, would you mind keeping out of the thread. If you are still having problems with your Genius or connection, then I would ask you to either contact the helpdesk or start your own thread so we can try to address them.

I suspect it's the same problem; I can provoke the problem with my router by doing a Speedtest, same as MadEngineer originally reported on the other thread.

@ubergeeknz: is there any logging option I can enable in the Genius? When I get home tonight I could try it. I am at work at the moment and can access the router through TeamViewer to my desktop at home, but don't want to do anything from remote location that will potentially crash the router! Will wait until I am physically on hand to try...

Haven't been trying to use it because it won't VLAN tag on the WAN side. For reference it's a DLink DIR-300

Cheap Dick Smith one. Back when I was on DSL, I had my DSL modem feeding it and it worked a treat. More reliable than the Genius and way less temperamental!

Not really, but the fact it happens on speedtests is not something I'd picked up earlier in this thread.

Please perform a factory reset on the router (you'll need to reconfigure your Wifi - I suggest you leave other settings alone for the purpose of this test). If it is still failing then let me know and I will get a replacement router organised. Cheers!

Edit: By the way, I just tested speedtests and facebook photo uploads (about 30 high-res photos) on a Genius on UFB, no problems ;) so the issue is certainly isolated and not a bug etc. Maybe there is some bad memory on the unit or similar.

I got around the facebook upload problem by setting facebook to use https. you can do this in two ways: there's a setting under the facebook account options to use a secure login, or delete http://*facebook.com from your url history and always open https://facebook.com.

It won't.

a) DIR-300 is not in the list of supported routers for either Tomato or dd-wrt

b) Even on those routers that will support dd-wrt, only a subset of them will implement 802.1q vlan tagging on the WAN side http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/VLAN_Support

I did just test with secure off, and no problems, but I'd recommend you turn secure on regardless - at least after doing some testing post factory reset.

I do speedtests from home quite frequently, and my modem is frequently up for weeks and weeks. I am on ADSL though, so it is not necessarily a fair test. I can't say I've done any facebook bulk uploads for some time since it's usually from my phone these days.

However with speed tests, it's one of the basic troubleshooting steps done by helpdesk so if it was causing modems to crash left right and centre we'd hear about it for sure...

To the OP: Please do try a factory reset. It may not fix the problem but stranger things have happened. Also if I ask for a replacement and we haven't tried that first, it's not going to happen. So please help us help you. Thanks.

if you say so. I was only going off google results that show otherwise where they had vlan tagging on that router with dd-wrt installed.

Done, no improvement. I can still reliably crash the router by uploading anything through Port 80. Uploading through https (port 443) works and doesn't cause the problem.

This should be a known problem by now.

I've had to get a replacement router due to crashing caused by uploading, or by attempting a speedtest (which doesn't complete).
