mercutio: michael.. i think you have a local cache.. i very much doubt you got 100mb/sec average to a US node of www2.ati.com in 1.8 seconds.

although it's nice that you get directed to US rather than AU.

Hah, this was actually done off one of my servers at Hurricane Electric (only because I had a SSH session open) - I was more or less testing via an IPv6 host if this was possibly the case. It's not, looks like one of the following:

- The OP's DNS is not set to Snaps DNS servers, causing it to resolve to a CDN server not close to the OP's location (overseas)
- Snap ain't doing things right and something is broken.

yeah i got bit by ipv6 by default.

even in the US can be a diff in speed between ipv4 and ipv6.

you'd probably actually get faster results by using 4.2.2.2 for www2.ati.com

# host www2.ati.com 4.2.2.2
Using domain server:
Name: 4.2.2.2
Address: 4.2.2.2#53
Aliases:

www2.ati.com is an alias for wpc.658C.att-acdn.net.
wpc.658C.att-acdn.net is an alias for wpc.658c.na.att-acdn.net.
wpc.658c.na.att-acdn.net has address 12.120.148.146

i got the same IP exactly as michaelmurphy got
with curl it's easy to force which IP to go to assuming you're not being transparently proxied (which snap don't afaik)

curl -x 12.120.148.146:80 http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/amd_catalyst_13.6_beta.exe > /dev/null

Which probably indicates that it's not Snap's core network or domestic transit that's the problem but upstream in a transit provider.

Could be that Snap doesn't have enough bandwidth to Aussie due to customer growth.

Alternatively may not be Snap's fault at all, could be a dodgy route back from the host which they have no control over.

If you try a wider range of tests to Australia you may be able to figure out if there is a common transit provider or network hop that's problematic.

Also whether it's problem only at peak time or throughout the day.

Yeah, by no means am I solely blaming Snap

It might be some form of peak time congestion as as the client.akamai.com came down at line speed, albeit the file is too small to do a proper test

However the www2.ati.com download is still slow

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback, I can see you have done your homework! While this isn't an issue in the Snap network, we've been in discussions with Edgecast today in order to see what we can do about improving this. Our network operations staff are in the process of standing up a 10Gbit peering session with Edgecast in Sydney in order to improve connectivity to them. We expect this to be done within the next week, but we're working to get everything arranged as quickly as possible so that you can download your "linux ISOs" as fast as possible! Obviously we don't have visibility into Edgecast's network, so we can't garuntee this will fix the issues, however this will ensure the best possible connectivity from our side into Edgecast's network.

Thanks,
Ralph

Hey, we have a 10Gbit peering facing Google, so there really shouldn't be any issues on our side. If you can run some traceroutes and send them through to support@snap.net.nz and we'll have a look into it.

Cheers, Ralph

Really nice to see a NZ ISP address problems like this openly with details of their actual plan and rough time frame.

Impressive.

Meanwhile on Orcon or Vodafone/Telstraclear.. 30+ pages and months later.....
