Yes johnr is quite right, location databases are really just best guess's for example most of Snap's customers will show as Christchurch as that is where our main IP Subnets are registered at APNIC, sites like Speedtest have no way at all of knowing your exact location - unless they had some sort of backend hook into our network, which they don't. The location listed in Speedtest and other Geo-site lookup's have absolutely no effect at all on your physical network.

Can you do a ping test from a command prompt to 202.37.101.1 (our anycast DNS) which for most locations in NZ will return a server which is in the closest major centre.

So here are my tests and my speedtest result (WJW - I manually select Christchurch as often it defaults to the North Canterbury server):

13ms seems way too long but maybe I'm expecting too much - you will also note, as previously mentioned, that the ping is the same through cmd and speedtest.

I have not been able to get below 20ms here in Masterton on Snap UFB. The fritzbox tells me that I am connected to the Auckland POP, which seems a bit weird as we are closer to Wellington or Christchurch. This is with ping tests in linux, and the same results happen on Speedtest.net.

Anyone????

People were pretty quick to rubbish me and say how speedtest is not a proper indication of what the true latency is etc. and yet when I post supporting ping and trace evidence I hear nothing.

Frankl,y I see lots of people on these forums with far lower ping times posting on here, including people using Chorus UFB just outside Christchurch, and yet Snap's seem to have increased markedly for people on Snap's UFB offering since they had their "UFB issues" back in early August (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=127440).

Here is a speedtest from back in July when I was first connected showing 0ms and ping aand trace tests at the time showed 2-5ms:

Some feedback from Ralph on this would be most appreciated.

From what I can tell it looks like your connection is terminated on their Wellington server (111.69.37.64).

any reason why you care? while i can't comment on where you are connected and why, 99.99999% of the internet is north of christchurch anyway - the only increased latency (and the difference here would be 10ms or so, not something you would notice in any practical situation) you would see is to sites hosted in CHCH/south island. to get out to the rest of the internet you still need to go up to auckland, so it doesn't really matter whether you terminate in wellington or new plymouth or whatever

I noticed the same thing, when I first had UFB installed my ping was around 5-6ms to the speedtest server, now its 16ms
figured it was probably my network and ignored it but that may not be the case

Skewt - as I mentioned in an earlier post, this all started happening around the time that Snap had their UFB issues (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=127440) and at the time when I called them they said that due to an equipment failure they were having to route everything through their Wellington servers - if the equipment failure has been fixed why are we still being routed via Wellington. Very interesting that "Ralph" has chosen not to respond to this thread after I posted my ping results and you raised the same query - very poor indeed. Even if there isn't an "issue" an explanation would be nice.

Well clearly Skewt and I aren't going via a server in the closest major city as that would be Christchurch.

Would be really good if someone from Snap could provide some answers.

This is a ping on fibre in Rotorua to the address in question (on FX not snap) - suggests that you do have an issue but no one here can really help you - you need to get snap support to look into it - perhaps it is a difficult fix and may take some time but I'm sure they will get to the bottom of it for you.
