Hey guys,

New stats post-upgrade are:

DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: Interleaved
Downstream Rate: 18276 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1059 kbps
Downstream Margin: 6 db
Upstream Margin: 7 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 28 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 7 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 12 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 21 db

So that's about a 2mb increase in download speed. Is there a way I can confirm I can connect via Annex-M?

Looks to me like you gained about 3mbit and change compared to the stats in your first post - nice!

Just go into your modem's connection page and change the connection type from Annex A or Multimode to Annex M. I've heard it can take several minutes to negotiate the connection the first time, so have patience.

Yup go into your modem and select it and apply. wait for a bit (does take a few minutes) and when you reconnect check your sync speeds.

Looks like I've been switched over today as well. Big gain for me - from just over 15mbit sync to just over 19mbit. Very happy with that as I'm a fair way from the exchange (attenuation 24, actually dropped from 25 before the BN switchover). Actual throughput seems great, too. Will wait til I get home from work to try out Annex M...

Far awat? With those stats, it will be a stone throw! :). Or from the cab at least.

No cabinet for me, and I'm well outside the "20mbit zone" on the SAT. I know it's definitely not a bad line by any means, but I still wasn't expecting such a big improvement over the Chorus gear. This is actually about the same sync my modem (Vigor 120) got at my last house, which was down the street from a cabinet and had an attenuation of about 5.

Annex A:

Annex M:

Swings and roundabouts really. I will probably stick with Annex A for daily use, but it'll be nice to have the option for those big upload jobs.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm running a Linksys WAG200G and I think the latest version is like 1.01.09 but I can't find a proper link to download it, even from the linksys website :/ will continue trying

Hi there,

I'm another Slingshot Naked DSL customer in Auckland. I have been trying to turn on Annex M on my connection this past week and getting no where with it! Already tried two routers I know to support the setting which hasn't made a difference. So I don't think I have been upgraded to the BN yet.. As the upgrade and move to the local cabinet should give me faster downstream sync, I wouldn't mind trading some of that for faster upstream speeds with Annex M. My line stats at the moment are as follows..

Downstream Upstream SNR Margin (dB): 12.4      12.5
Attenuation                                  (dB): 17.5      6.8
Power                                           (dBm): 19.2   12.4
Attainable Rate                             (Kbps): 15980 1005
Rate                                             (Kbps): 13226 1005

If anyone from Slingshot support is reading this could you guys please look into my account? Since SS have already started upgrading NDSL customers over to the BN I'd like to be included in the process asap.. My username is "Tazim.Sinjal" and I can PM you any other account details if needed.

Thanks in advance
TazZ

P.S. Edited for clarity, format.

If you are on a Chorus cabinet (and the noise margin suggests you are), you cannot get annex M.

I gathered that from the earlier conversations in this thread and others. Thought the line conditions are probably 50% due to the wiring in the flat. We have a monitored alarm wiring, as well as 6 BT jackpoints installed in different rooms with no master splitter or cat5 cabling to the router. Although since it's NDSL there are no phones connected in any of the rooms either and the alarm currently unmonitored.

In the longer term I'll be looking at cleaning up the wiring mess in the flat, getting a master filter/splitter installed near the ETP and getting a Naked VDSL plan (when/if released by SS) and all the rest. Our area is not due to get Fiber for two more years so that's not an option for now! So currently my goal is to petition SS to upgrade me to the local cabinet if possible. From the sounds of the earlier posts that should get me (slightly) faster speeds and the option of using Annex M. All without having to make any changes here at home. Sounds like a perfect place to make a start

The cabinets have Chorus gear, and do not do Annex M.

Oh OK.. I saw something about Sub-loop UCLL at the Chorus website earlier so figured Slingshot might have their gear installed in the cabinets by now. Guess reality is lagging behind on that front a bit

Slingshot: Kind of. We haven't released it as a retail product yet. There have been a handful of people where we've migrated them to Better Network NDSL but we're still working on releasing it to the rest :)

Still, I wouldn't mind getting upgraded to the Better Network.. however it is delivered in the end.

There is ULL gear in some exchanges, if you are connected directly to an exchange, but not cabinets.

EDIT: It is technically possible to have ULL gear in a cabinet, but ordinarily it doesn't make economic sense for an ISP to do this.

Mornin' Tazz. Looks like Chris (not me ;) ) replied to an email you sent this morning. He's passed your account off to our provisioning chaps to check availability and migrate you if we can :)

Cheers,
Chris
