RunningMan:
JokezNZ: [snip] What exactly is an isolation test?

If you read through the troubleshooting links in the first reply to this topic, it will teach you how to do it.

You will then have a good idea as to where the problem lies, internal or external, and this can be passed to the helpdesk.

So the internet dropped out over night and I moved the modem back to the original jack point but it's still syncing at 1/3rd of what it should be.

As to the quote above, i'm on naked BB and have never had anything plugged into the other jack points so I guess technically i'm always meeting the isolation test parameters.

Nope!

The idea of an isolation test is to isolate everything that is internal to your building/home etc. from the rest of the network, in order to work out where a problem lies.

It will isolate issues such as bridge taps, poor or faulty joints, defective jack points, poor topography and faulty equipment, any of which can cause the problems you are having. Just because a jack point has nothing connected to it doesn't mean it cannot cause a problem for xDSL.

Ideally, you need to connect the modem as close as possible to the demarc point, where the external cable is joined to the internal cabling of the building, with the remained of the building wiring not connected. If you are not comfortable checking wiring to this level, then I'd advise to leave it alone, and get a professional in to do it for you. Either your ISP can arrange a tech to come out, or there are various companies around, including some on this forum who can do it as well (depending on your location of course).

What has your ISP's helpdesk said in regards to the issue - any clues from their end?

Thanks for your replies :).

Well there's two jack points in the flat and i've plugged the modem into both, both having the same issue (poor sync speeds, failures to sync). I haven't bothered ringing the helpdesk yet, at this point I don't believe it is worth it as I know how much of a struggle it is to communicate with them. I've had poor sync speeds from time to time but whenever I reset the modem it would sync at full line speeds however this time, over the last few days, it has stayed at poor sync speeds. Besides this the internet here has been fine over the last two years that's why I find it highly coincidental that we were moved onto the "better network" a couple weeks back (which I believe was LLU) and these issues have only just stuck.

As coffeebaron says, a master filter will be the end of any internal problems - time after time installing one resolves the sort of issues you describe.

However, if the issue has been caused by a change to LLU, then IMO not informing the helpdesk so they can test for and address the issue seems a bit silly...
