Ah I see someone else has changed to Snap from VF because of their routing.

When I say someone else that implies I have... I will once Chorus finish my UFB install... I'm told Wellington Electricity still won't let them climb the power poles to install the cable.

Note that I haven't switched from Vodafone to Snap. I am running both connections at home now, with the Vodafone cable still being my primary.

The idea is to experience xDSL solutions, the Snap service and their hardware (Fritz!box and Fritz!Fon).

For full disclosure I am not paying for this second connection.

Over the years I got a lot of services, products, travel. I have a blog post with my disclosure (check my signature, it needs update now). Never had a problem saying something is good or not.

Perhaps you prefer reading some "reviews" on sow "newspapers" where the "reviewer" offer the content for free to the editors with disclosing he is actually getting cash from the suppliers. Yes, go on.

Also note I am using a ADSL2+ service. In terms of speed it can't compare to what I get on cable. And I made this clear.

Well that's useful to know, I want to know what the fritzfon is like - it seems pricey, I assume you're going to do a write up on the equipment and service at some point?

Pretty impressed with the FritzFon. You see it's not a SIP handset, but rather a DECT handset paired to the router. I received the box with a Snap phone number but had no problem creating a new account with my own mynetfone AU number.

The UI on the FritzBox is a bit hard to navigate as it uses different names. I found how to configure the default VoIP service to use but only after going through all the menus. For example the overview shows "Port Forwarding" with a direct link but if you are on any other page you have to go to "Permit Access" when I was expecting something around "Network Access" or "Security".

No big deal. The hardware is pretty interesting in design, and made in Germany. The system is pretty good at accepting changes to settings - way better than Netgear routers for example, which when I tried would require a router restart on EVERY single page change, meaning configuring the router for my WAN and LAN requirements would take a long time.

I like how it supports IPv6 out of the box and Snap provide IPv6 as well.

Now that Vodafone cable has improved its international speeds, does it spank the Snap ADSL connection for Crashplan backups like you would think that it would do?

No, the routing to Crashplan (and Geekzone) are still screwed up on Vodafone. One side says it's the other's problem. It seems lack of peering at some point is the problem.
