Best way to check if its a machine on your network causing the traffic is this - unplug the router from the power for a few hours. Then plug it back in and check the Orcon usage logs for that period. If theres data showing, then something funny going on, either with your line or Orcons logging. (I think there is a slight delay with it showing)

If theres no data showing, then its def something on your system/s causing the data use.

Hi ADKM - a friend shared this program with me - http://www.netlimiter.com/.  You can download the free version and it can be used to identify what (if any) software on your computer is using bandwdith over a period of time. I've been using it and it operates in the backgroud just fine. It might take a little bit of finding but I'm pretty sure it can be setup to record activity over a period of time.

You'd certainly expect no usage if the router was disconnected... but as it  shows by the day, not the hour AFAIK and it's need to be off for
quite a while, taking the phone with it. Will try it though.

What is relationship between filesize and data throughput?  It can't be one to one...but surely not every byte is sent 3 times?

Hi Bruizerbg

I've just deleted it !!  Yes, it was good but it would not distinguish between Internet and LAN  e.g. if you move a file or watch something over DLNA
it would add to the throughput total.

But where internet-only could be guesstimated it was it was interesting to note the outgoing Vs incomng - and to see what programmes were doing what.

Perhaps overnight you could unplug everything from the modem, turn off wifi alltogether, but leave the modem going so you still have the phone.

Check the usage before you do it, and in the morning. If there is any significant usage, assuming it's an Orcon supplied modem, I'd suggest it's their issue to sort out.

I see what you mean... pull the LAN out from all the comps and leave the router on.. will try that. Wifi is not enabled.

LOL I suppose same thing would be turn the comps off...

Its possible your router has been compromised..... (I don't know but a suggestion)

A while ago I saw some guy pinging my router over and over... so I slowly flood pinged his IP address I left it flooding for a few days it worked out to be around 20gb per day I was using (if the person was on unlimited)
Anyway I'm not flooding you lol... But the point is sometimes data may be used even if your router is the only thing on...

Netlimited is a good start though, It will (if there's not too much LAN traffic) it should indicate where your data is going.
