Sideface: Your attenuation is VERY high - no wonder you have a slow connection

The modem is displaying it strangely; it's actually 38 dB, not 380. The data rate is far too low for 38; I used to be at 54 before the local cabinet went in and I still got around 4.5 Mb/s.

It is displaying correctly, it's just the unit of measurement is 0.1db, it also looks like he's on ADSL1

The modem says that I am using G.dmt.bis, which wikipedia says is ADSL2. Is this correct?

Yep just give them a call. They can do a port reset easily.

Yes, you have ADSL2.

ADSL download speeds vary with downstream attenuation:
54dB    ADSL2+ Max Speed = 4.2 Mbps
38dB    ADSL2+ Max Speed = 10 Mbps
(these are theoretical maximum speeds)

I have a downstream attenuation of 21dB, which I consider to be high, and get 12 Mbps with ADSL2 (with good new house wiring and a master filter)

Your original post implies that your connection used to be faster - is this correct?
Do you have a master filter?

Sorry I must have missed this post!

There is no master filter that I am aware of, and yes the speeds used to be higher. I will call and ask for a port reset and see if that fixes anything, fingers crossed!

CoffeeBaron installing a master filter will probably sort this out I imagine. Port reset will not fix wiring problems.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

That's pretty much what the guy just told me on the phone. He asked me to do an isolation test, which I already have, but also asked me to try another modem before they send anyone out. I don't have a spare modem on me but will update once I have tried that as well.

Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to buy a Master Filter and get it installed? I'm assuming CoffeeBaron takes care of this for many of the people on here haha?

I also found this mess under the house, which I'm assuming is something important? It doesn't look held together too well though... Sorry about the lighting, its under the house and taken with the flash from my cellphone... Would a Master Filter come off this somewhere?

As above, I can sort out your wiring. Send me a message or email. Cost is typically $150 special Geekzone price, though occasionally a bit more if job is major. Looks like you have under floor access, so should be fairly straightforward.

Hey coffeebaron. When you say sort out wiring, do you mean that if anything is wrong with the wiring this can also be fixed as part of that charge? I will need to talk to the landlord about it, I'm sure they won't mind me doing something that will benefit the house however!

Basically yes; cost covers checking / replacing wiring from demarc (or point of entry), new dedicated xDSL jack-point, master filter etc. It covers primary sorting out the wiring for broadband side, i.e. if once broadband wiring is sorted and there is e.g. a voice jack-point not working, this is extra work.
