f3ar: OK this is just getting ridiculous. This is what the AVM serious recovery has to say:

Right, let's lay down the facts.

1. Firmware downgrade has been hard-disabled. It is impossible to downgrade the firmware.

2. Snap has hard coded the initial settings into the device. A GUI factory reset doesn't do jack.

3. They have also locked out factory recovery of the device.

I'm going to have to have a strong worded discussion to Snap about this, as I have a box with a sub-par firmware, that stuffs up and crashes when you configure port forwarding that doesn't work, and is locked down.

Not happy.

i would too. not being able to downgrade to the known best firmware for short VDSL lines is a little short-sighted.

seems odd that a factory reset doesn't fix you though..

digging into the German forums, this could be a bootloader image messing with you. unfortunate thing is, firstly, you telnet and the chops to risk bricking on a downgrade of the loader.

secondly, not 100% sure on the process..

I'm not experiencing any issues but I definitely don't want a permanently locked device. I want to take it to a new ISP if I want. So I am assuming one should be able to unlock the box from SNAP. If not, I'll want to return it or a refund.

OK so I got somewhat of a response from Snap.

About the inability to downgrade, this perhaps is caused by the newer 'v2' boxes from AVM that might have some hardware differences that aren't supported in older releases. AVM is also now keen on preventing people from using old releases due to the security issues with the older boxes.

About the factory reset, what I got from Snap is that this is because of the new way they provision boxes, with a custom firmware with a default config of Snaps. The solution is, what what I gathered, is to load up a factory release from AVM FTP and then do a reset. It should then restore to the defaults of the vanilla image.

They also gave me a beta V6 release that's apparently fixed all the bugs currently in V6 (sync issues, SMB stuff etc). Not sure if I'll try this as they couldn't guarantee a downgrade would work, so I'd be stuck on a potentially crusty beta firmware. The official release is expected in a week or so.

They're not confusing the 7390 with the 7360 are they?
As far as I am aware the 7360 I have is a v2, read somewhere that the main difference is that v2 has a 32MB flash rom, 7390 is only 16MB yeah?
