sbiddle: You're pretty much on the edge of coverage from the exchange (which is on the cnr of Waitoa and Moxham)

Despite the fact that I'm on the edge of the exchange's coverage, even with the fault the tech found he said I should be syncing closer to 16Mbit downstream not 11Mbit as we're currently experiencing. Chorus has historical data saying our line has achieved 18Mbit previously.

Not including the path down to the house (and with many assumptions), from the front of my house to the exchange is 600m. With my current attenuation rates and again many assumptions, my connection could theoretically max at 21Mbit.

Prior to our VDSL upgrade, our ADSL connection was syncing at 8Mbit. However, we didn't not have the master filter in place at that time so things could be better now. At this stage I don't want to switch back to ADSL and risk crippling my already bad rates without a "there's nothing we can do in regards to the fault" from Chorus.

You assume the cable takes the most direct route. It frequently doesn't. Detouring down every side street etc.

One of the assumptions I took was that it was a direct route, however that is not relevant to what I'm trying to say.

Just to clarify again, I'm not asking for super fast internet with VDSL syncing at 30+Mbit at my location (it's just unrealistic). I'm asking because there is a fault in the line causing my speeds to suffer, in which the fix requires some roadworks (if what the Downers tech said was correct), what are the chances that Chorus will schedule the fix to be completed. Will they tell me to stick to my VDSL connection syncing at 11~13Mbit and wait till UFB arrives or are they more inclined to try to maintain the old copper network till its decommissioned in the future.

That's what I figured sadly, but I have a Chorus tech swinging by today, we shall see what happens.

Sadly not at this stage, might have to give Slingshot a call later today. Hopefully something happens within the next week!

Multiples (bridged taps) on the line is not a fault, ist a design of the phone network thats isn't optimised for DSL. Ideally it should be reworked and all the extra branches taken off the line, but as you say its probably not worth Chorus spending heaps to upgrade an obsolete network.

Time to find a new industry!
