Yeah, I guess it ultimately did end up steering in that direction. I wanted to get some second opinions on the connection itself to see if the technician was accurate or not (many ISPs - at least in the US - are notorious for sending out unqualified techs that give improper information). Hio77 gave me that second opinion. If it's possible, it may not be a bad idea for a moderator to merge this thread with that one since the topic pretty much shifted course to that anyway.

Hah, true that! To be fair, the United States is in a really poor spot for ISP competition right now. You basically get a choice of one horrendously overpriced local cable provider, one semi-decent DSL provider, dial-up, and if you're lucky, maybe a local DSL provider or two (although such local municipalities usually have terrible options). New Zealand's Internet speeds and pricing are quickly shaping up to be downright awesome with the government-regulated competition, assuming you're in an urban place, that is. I try not to think about the rural Internet options here...!

I don't know why you would bother with VDSL if HFC is available. HFC has the same upload speed as VDSL but the download is 5 times that of what your line would achieve on VDSL.

Chorus have done the right thing for a change and not installed VDSL for the simple reason that it will be an average speed increase and would drop out all the time. "Street distance" to the exchange means absolutely nothing in the majority of cases.

It's not a choice that I made, chevrolux. It's up to the landlord. Basically, he wants to always use an unlimited connection because it's hard to predict how heavily the Internet connection would be used in a month. With seventeen people, it's entirely possible that 500 GB would not be enough. Again, if Vodafone had an unlimited plan, that's what the landlord would be using.

I'll be fine with my own personal connection, though. It'll be pricey, but it will pay itself off.

Just to second that.. Vodafone have just lost my business of several years at one premises because they refuse to offer an unlimited plan. When TelstraClear did the unlimited trials (both the weekend "Free for all" and the not advertised long term trial of a bunch of users) I had hope it was coming soon, but no, they decided to price gouge and put the price of cable _up_ instead. UFB 100 with no data cap for $129 from Orcon/Slingshot is just a much better value proposition than the HFC plans, and gives you total bill shock protection.
