Cadriel: Well, whats nice about Freetz - is they have 'patches' that can remove individual features and components from the original firmware. So for example, one of their patches removes MyFritz. Or WLAN - or whatever really. My firmware above doesn't touch any of that, but the possibility is there.

There's also patches to 'fix' things in Fritz that the developers of Freetz felt necessary.

Its also smart in the fact that when you tell it to install dnsmasq, it disables multid's DNS and DHCP.

In any case, if you've hit some exploit you want to avoid, there's every possibility that Freetz has it covered already. :)

Does freetz offer a patch for issues with Broadcom cabinets in which the cards don't sync?
It would be nice to get firmware 6.03 with the DSL modem from firmware 5.22.
I have a 7340 by the way.

I suspect the modem is a kernel driver - and I think they're pretty locked down by AVM. I didn't notice anything re: modem changes in the menu's for freetz. It's probably possible with some tinkering, but not something I have the time to look into sorry. :)

there is one of the 6.0 firmwares that allow you to select the older modem drivers, but it doesnt infer which driver it is.

Apparently this is the 6.03 beta for the 7390, but I can't try it since I don't have a 7390.

ah. im scared to touch any of the beta firmwares, last one i touched i wasnt too happy and the snap CSR that gave it to me to try got me on an angry tone :L (had 3 device crashes in 30 mins. loosing DLM-1 too.)

I'll probably go to a 6.03 based freetz setup when we get UFB, that way any potential issues with VDSL are unlikely. I'm at 800m to 1.1km attenuation equiv. Mine also says:

VDSL2 Ikanos 0.1 - H0 0 B500494B4E53 362E372E 01

I'm hoping freetz will improve the wifi - particualrly i'd love to disable this "feature". And any other power saving modes for that matter.
No WLAN device registered any more: Reducing power consumption (5 GHz).

Which seems to not play nice when other devices go into sleep mode.

I finally took the plunge and have implemented Freetz on my 7390 as well. Like Cadriel, I had a need for DNSMasq in my home network.

I built my own image using the Freetz guide which was pretty straight forward.

I am running the 7390 v6.06 AVM Firmware with the Freetz development trunk with just DNSMasq and Dropbear for SSH packages only.

I was pleasantly surprised how seamless this process was with all of my existing stock v6.06 settings being kept after re-imaging.

My Fritz!Box is solid as usual after 24 hours of operation so far.

Since I upgraded my fritz it keeps reverting to 20MHz wifi because of other networks. FFS of course there are other networks! Used to work mint on 40MHz for covering downstairs in the kitchen etc where the upstairs and garage APs were too weak to work properly (Those would be the "other" networks) - it can also see the neighbours networks but only at -80ish so they shouldnt have any effect.

But since deploying the fritz on my second line which is now bigpipe VDSL I am seeing lower than ADSL downstream (15-16ish) and 3ish up so I think I will probably just replace it if fretz doesnt do anything to fix its hopeless VDSL support.

I upgraded to the 6.06 firmware the other day on my freetz image with no issues too.

@richms, I turned off my frtiz's wireless months ago - it never performed very well for me. I ended up sticking two apple airport extreme's in our house for wireless coverage. In saying that, the fritz has always given me stellar ADSL speeds though.

Does the Freetz firmware have a proper firewall? I can't guess what the firewall is on the stock firmware but it's not iptables.

iptables can be installed as part of your freetz image, yes.

However - it appears under the list of 'unstable' packages - so take it as it is I guess. I imagine its because there's no web interface involved and you probably have to know what you're doing re its setup.

Sorry to revive an old topic....

Fritz OS is up to version 6.20 now, any chance you could do an image based on that? Keen to try out your DNSMasq trick myself, but I got a bit lost trying to work out how to build my own image!
