Just did a back-to-back comparison using the Orcon and Sydney Ookla speedtest servers, I'm a bit rural so this is line speed for me - other than 20ms extra ping (42ms is still awesome), Sydney may as well be right next door - and these tests were both done at peak time, approx 9pm tonight and only 2mins apart.

and to the Orcon server in Auckland

Sorry, can't see these. 40 ms is apparently the Gold Standard to Sydney 24/7.

Sorry, can't see these. 40 ms is apparently the Gold Standard to Sydney 24/7.

Not sure where the images have gone, suffice to say both Sydney and Auckland were identical speeds at 7.6 and 7.57 down and 0.87 upload with pings of 22ms Auckland and 42ms to Sydney - but I am on a pretty rural connection.

Looks good, although the up and down speeds to Orcon seem a little low. Will check how it is at peak times.

To get the best Orcon result use the Orcon speedtest server at speedtest.orcon.net.nz rather than the Ookla one, both the above are good though given you are synced at 38Mbps.

Why is the Orcon speedtest server on speedtest.net so erratic with results? All others in Auckland seem fine (at least in my testing).

No, the orcon server on speedtest.net I've noticed it always seems to be slower than others, or it starts out really quick then drops right down.

I don't see that; the results from both tests are almost identical. When I was with Maxnet, the Orcon server was often the fastest.

I'm not with you, if I load up speedtest.net FROM an Orcon connection it will give me a test TO an Ookla server, we host our own at speedtest.orcon.net.nz so if Ookla claim a different "Orcon" server I'm not sure what that is....??? Do you have a link to it?

I meant, if I select Auckland: Hosted by Orcon Internet LTD it was showing worse results than the VF server for example. (speedtest.net)

Running a test using speedtest.orcon.net.nz shows normal results.

w2krules: 23! I didn't think it was that many... There are 4 of us - everyone has a iPhone and a desktop and/or laptop. There's also a couple of printers, a server, game consoles, tablets - it all adds up. Usually there's just the 4 of us here.

We're not using the Orcon VOIP. There is currently a Asus dual-band router being used as a wireless AP.

I suspect most of the up is file sharing, I should check that the others have a bandwidth limit set for uploads.

I've had to do that for my torrenting at home, and I'm on VDSL too. Mum and sister be like my streaming slow...checked my bit torrent and I'm pushing the full 10mb up.

Something to keep an eye on anyway.
