I do not see orcon as much of a premium brand? Maybe a tad more premium then slingshot?

Orcon was one of slingshots top competitors

Why do they need 3 brands that all do the same thing - provide internet

Top 5 ISP's in New Zealand (My Guess)

Telecom
Vodafone
Orcon
Slingshot
Flip

And now 3 of these are all owned by the same company :/ I don't see this as a good thing

I don't agree with the slingshot being the pits

It use to be sure, however over the last few years they have got a lot better, If I had my pick of any ISP out there I would stay with slingshot.
If anything I see Orcon as a cheaper brand than slingshot these days.

I wonder if this would mean slingshot fibre would be crossing over to ultra fast fibre the soon branded "giganet" from next month.Currently callplus only offers plans to business customers on ultra fast fibre.I would like to see another major ISP on ultrafast.

Nope. They can never ever take it away from you. That's what 'for life' means. If they take it away they open themselves up to a pretty serious comcom investigation. Think how many people may have signed up when they started promoting email for life. They would have to compensate everyone of them for misleading advertising.
(This is why offering something 'for life' or promising you will 'never' do something is very short sighted)

Actually slingshot is really good these days.

Support is fast and even front line desk support is good (usually I dread front line help).

Speed is really good, can max VDSL (around 40 Mbps) even on p2p.
You tube is flawless.
Latency is very low too.

I get lower latencies than most others who are on Voda cable, or other ISP's VDSL in my area.

The "pits" would be worldnet, perhaps compass still?

Doesn't matter. The promise was made and would be something the new owners would have to have taken into account when making the purchases. It's a liability that they would acquire as part of acquiring orcon.

Legally this simply isn't true. Legally the new owners are not obliged to take the liabilities of a company. They will do so, because it would be stunningly bad PR to do otherwise.
