Gee that's quite long, I quite like my 6 digit vodafone number, my memory is shot lol, having any longer than that could mean trouble lol

Orcon is the MVNO on Vodafone's GSM network - setting up the billing system is the killer/time consuming part. I guess that's what is holding it up...

Article on stuff today saying delay is due to "porting issues" with Vodafone

...He says Vodafone has offered to provide an alternative means for Orcon to port numbers, but it has a number of drawbacks, which he is not prepared to discuss.

"The advice I am getting from Vodafone is there is a technical issue that they would prefer not to have to overcome. But we have advised Vodafone we won't launch until they overcome it.

Vodafone spokesman Paul Brislen denied Vodafone was offering a non-standard system for number porting. "Vodafone is deploying a number portability scheme to support its mobile virtual network operator [MVNO] partners. The scheme is industry standard and has been accepted by the other MVNO partners," he says. ...

Hopefully it's sorted out, very interested in new offerings through Orcon

That article seemed very negative to me.. Anyone else? I cant see orcon launching now, vodafone isnt going to do anything to help them launch, they don't need anymore competition.. so game over im afraid.. unless they go with telecom, but that would be a ~~bad~~ terrible idea!

I thought it seemed negative, but not unfair.

And what's good for Orcon is good for Vodafone, they are a MVNO (Orcon is using Vodafone's Network) which means Vodafone makes revenue off Orcon Mobile.. Vodafone will want Orcon to launch

I heard a few weeks ago that there were technical delays which were primarily caused by Orcon wanting to impliment services that nobody else in NZ is going. I didn't get too many details but it revolved around portability and fixed/mobile integration.

I don't want to go defending or blaming anybody but it seems that Vodafone are being called the bad guys here when they may not necessarily be doing anything wrong.

This is not good news, I am hoping to have another provider, as NZ pricing for mobile services is way expensive for a well developed country!

Vadafone have offered a temporary solution regarding portability, which Orcon have for whatever reason decided to decline to accept at this stage. Everything else is hearsay at the moment.

Orcon have spent far too long planning this to throw it all away now - so yes the service is still coming! (I hope :D)

The porting "issue" seems like a piddly little excuse to me - I'm sure this is something that can be sorted out, most likely it's something to do with "porting" between the Orcon and Vodafone number ranges - since that's not a "real" port? You would think VF were reasonably well versed with that sort of thing though after TelstraClear/029...

I just received an email from Orcon Chief Executive Scott Barlett, and I will copy here:

You would have read the DomPost piece on Monday which indicated that there is discord between Vodafone and Orcon regarding the roll-out.

I want to correct this impression. The particular issue that was reported – concerns about number portability – are real, but relate to the longer term plans for Orcon’s mobile service, and as such do not impact on the short-term launch of Orcon mobile (watch this space - we are stilling working on a launch time-frame/ marketing plan etc).

Over the past few days Orcon and Vodafone have worked together to identify a porting solution which will serve Orcon (and other resellers) for the first stages of the service. Vodafone is designing a long term porting solution for subsequent implementation., and we have been assured and are confident that customers of Vodafone's resellers will enjoy an efficient and reliable porting experience from day one.

We have had a good working relationship with Vodafone for many years, and are on track to bring an exciting mobile service and offering to market later this year, utilising Vodafone’s wholesale service.

I just wanted to set the record straight on this issue, simply because this project is important to both organisations and the progression of mobile in New Zealand.
