Hi @MichaelNZ
This is not a 2degrees charge, as Steve said, we are passing on the service as your service provider.
Our agents are made aware of Premium Text and should point customers to our info page on this service - premium-text-services.
It's important to check the small print when entering your mobile number on some websites and promotions as you may be giving the company permission to send you stuff using this service and get charged for it. They should always quote the cost of these texts.
If you'd like us to look into this further please PM us your number and 4 digit number.
Thanks
^POB

I take it you are suggesting this is all a mistake on my behalf for being a dumb customer and willingly handing my number over to miscreant marketers?
You are way off the mark
I'm not stupid (unless buying your services counts) and I don't appreciate being insulted publicly by insinuation.
I owe you nothing. Every account has been fully paid before the due date and as far as I can tell that is about all I owe you.
There is no, zip, nada, nil proof of me agreeing to any such (dubious) "service". I have never done a premium text or dialed a 0900 in my life so what makes you think I would do that now?

Based on Two Degrees Website 4445 is InfoPack and their contact is 0800 180 900
They should be able to justify why you've been subscribed to this service.
What I'd like to see is for carriers to detect STOP messages and prevent the charge being made by the service provider.

Service Providers are required to give you a free opt-out (section 7.8.4). I'm sure you can understand just how well keyword filtering for this purpose would work - about as well as it does everywhere else.

That doesn't apply in this instance because I have not contracted to receive any "service".
It's obvious 2degrees (and I expect their competition as well) is trying desperately to weasel out of this one because it's just too lucrative.
They must be dreaming because I have no intention of letting it slide. I have lodged a complaint with the TDR and am going to be calling the CC. While I have my doubts about the latter's ability to do much, it's all a good opportunity to keep this issue in the public sphere.

Well, that's also covered in the code I provided to you.

7.8.4 Charges: The Customer must not incur any charge for unsubscribing using the ‘STOP’ command unless the Messaging Service terms and conditions clearly state that there would be a charge of no more than the Standard Charge to opt out.
Thanks for that.
I have now contacted the Commerce Commission and they have taken the complaint for consideration.

Agreement to what we consider spam these days comes from Such innocent procedures as
Signing a Petition
Installing smart phone app
Installing Facebook App
Ordering Tickets
Subscribing to online media provider services
Newsletter Signup
Entering competitions
Purchasing from retailer
Purchasing from e-tailer
Subscribing to news site to post comments or interact
Donating money (I kid you not!) where a transparent collection agency is doing so onbehalf
Will all catch you out and pass on details to partners. They don't have to verbally tell you if its in the 4th paragraph of a 'I acknowledge to terms and conditions of sale' box you click or sign to. More so targeting the busy lifestyler that doesn't tend to read what is being agreed to.
Want an example, check out the marketing attached to the latest McDonalds comp app they are pushing hard when you get time.. https://mcdonalds.co.nz/sites/mcdonalds.co.nz/files/Monopoly_Terms_and_Conditions_NZ_2016.pdf

n, an Entrant also acknowledges that a further primary purpose for collection of the Entrant’s Personal Information by the Promoter is to contact the Entrant in the future with information about McDonald’s, including special offers, market research or to provide the Entrant with marketing materials via any medium including mail, telephone and commercial electronic messages (SMS (Short Message Service), MMS (Multimedia Message Service), IM (Instant Messaging) and email) or any other form of electronic, emerging, digital or conventional communications channel whether existing now or in the future. By entering the Promotion and opting-in, an Entrant acknowledges and agrees that the Promoter may use the Entrant’s Personal Information in the manner set out in this condition.
Keep us posted with how you get on, i'd be interested to know.
When ever I send an SMS to a short code it gives me a prompt warning of potential charges, and generally I just don't bother from this knowledge. But I know people who have been surprised to see the charge come through from other devices - maybe other messaging apps don't warn?
It'd also be interesting to see how your number got registered for the service, always note when I'm requested to provide my number for any forms etc, like the ones at the mall offering a prize of free travel... As this might warn others where the source was.

I know who the advertiser is (The Tool Shed) and they have permission to email me.
Thing is they do not have permission to subscribe me to premium text services.
At the end of the day, that's not the main point because if the unsubscribe was free that would have been the end of the matter. In their case, I am happy to receive marketing communications from them by email - I do not accept being ripped off on the unsubscription from the text messages.

Then you need to contact them to get a refund and ensure the subscription is cancelled they are responsible not 2 Degrees
