So Orcon are you going to be updating the FritzBox 7490 anytime soon or are they going to get to version 10.0 before you decide to update us to 6.80 (or 6.83 as that's the latest version)

You're lucky, I'm still stuck on the 6.2 firmware and  I would really really like even a slightly more up-to-date version. Most of the modems that Orcon ship out have had the update option removed from the menus so we are stuck until Orcon push a firmware update out. Even if Orcon only pushed an update out every 18 months, I could live with that.

Is there an option to disable SSLv3 in 6.2? if not I would say that would be a good enough reason for Orcon to start seriously looking at pushing out an update or at least publish something on how to manually update yourself at your own risk.

They are leaving their customers open to a security vulnerability if they don't, the latest firmware updates have completely removed SSLv3 from the operating system.

Apparently the only way to update without Orcon's help is to do an emergency firmware restore to a newer version.

What I am worried about is if I do it and I end up not having internet as a result of wanting more up to date firmware.

Got a surprise today when I went into the management page of the Fritz Box 7490. I saw that the firmware has been upgraded to the latest version (6.83). Don't know when it was done but glad it has finally happened.

Slingshot do the same by removing the update button, which the 7490 that Slinghot did supply is an Orcon modem. The easiest way I found to get around this is too

Download the latest firmware from here

https://en.avm.de/service/fritzbox/fritzbox-7490/knowledge-base/publication/show/1574_Updating-FRITZ-OS-manually/

Backup your settings by using the backup in the 7490

Unplug the modem from the internet (in my case I removed the ethernet cable going to the ONT

Factory reset the modem in the options, after its restart the update button will now be there.

Once factory reset, log into the modem using the fritz.box address into your browser, go to the update menu and update from the manually downloaded firmware file.

After loading this update and after restarting, log back into the modem

Restore your saved configuration file

After restoring your configuration file, and after it has rebooted, you will have the new firmware. Remember as soon as the reboot has been done after the restoration of the saved configuration file, the update button will be missing again.

Plug your internet back in

All your internet, phone settings, telephone book (if you have one), filters etc will all be restored.

The only thing I had to redo again after the update is pair the dect phones back up to the modem if you have phones connected in this manner.

I am running the Lab or Beta versions at the moment and like the new features in the updates.

NOTE: It must be done in the above order, if you factory reset, then restore your saved configuration file before upgrading the firmware, you will lose your update button again. I believe this is because the configuration file that you will have saved will have the remove update menu in this configuration file.
