Thanks everyone for the advice. I am in two minds to look at fitting myself. I have naked VDSL and it looks simple.

But at the same time, I know how simple jobs get complicated quick... so maybe I will wait for the test to finish tomorrow and ask Slingshot how much it would cost for Chorus to fit a master splitter.

Again, thank you to everyone for your contributions and advice. This has been quite a few days of learning!

$298 is the price on this side of the fence if straight up.

Depending on how keen you are; know a fair few people who roll with diy.

If you can find and access the ETP where the cable arrives from the street, and you can find a route to run a new cable from there to wherever you want the modem, that's the hard bit of the job done.

As long as you are comfortable pulling cable and crimping/punching down the ends, then it's not a difficult job.

Update! So after the tests over the weekend, I spoke with slingshot this morning. The agree the speeds are looking very low despite being on the outer reaches of VDSL.

I asked about having the lines to the house replaced and having a master filter installed. This is what they had to say.

  • The master filter will be fitted and they have scheduled this with Chorus! I can expect to hear back shortly for them to schedule this. There will be no charge if it makes a difference, but if it doesn't then they will charge me.
  • As for new lines to the house from the road, that cost would sit with me and could cost thousands.

So I have as you can imagine opted to wait for the master filter to be fitted and see how I get on with that.

I do have a question... So I found the EPT or demarc outside the house over the weekend. It has those lovely three pronged screws in, so rather than bodging them I thought I would leave opening it up. Presumably housed in here is this cable that runs all the way down to the street.

If it is this cable that is old and useless, is it a matter of them tying the new cable to it and pulling it through? Or would they have to start digging etc?

If it was that simple (And I do realise that there is no such thing as a simple job as something always goes wrong), is the cable and engineers time massively expensive?!

Thanks for the continue support, and if anyone is reading this I hope it is giving you some information on the options available!

Richard

The ETP that you have found should normally just contain the join between the lead-in cable and your internal wiring. The master filter should also be installed in the ETP, and a new cable run run from there to your modem outlet.

The cable from you to the exchange is not one long continuous single cable, but will have joins along the way where branches meet. The lead-in (if underground) may be direct buried or within a conduit, and will go back to a (usually) grey pillar which may be at the end of the driveway or similar. Here it will meet other nearby cables, and be routed back to the next join.

Good to see the master splitter install is happening - this is really positive. Will be interesting to see the sync rates before and after.

Theres unlikely to be anything wrong with an underground leadin cable unless you know you have dug through the pipe! Any issue is likely to be at either end of the cable, but the more common issue is your internal house wiring that is supposed to always have a master filter with any VDSL install.

Time to find a new industry!

Apologies for piggybacking on this topic, I'm also with Slingshot VDSL (naked) and this sparked my curiosity.
I noticed my Line attenuation is rather high on the upstream side. I have several jack points here, but never really checked if any of the others are active. I'm wondering if I should check if the others are connected and have them removed or get a fresh new jack point installed closer to the demarc point. I'm certain the jack point I am using isn't the master point but wouldn't be able to confirm unless I crawl under the house. No Fibre here til 2020

Just wondering if someone could chime in and give me some feedback on my stats below?

upstream is hard to comment on with VDSL, it's somewhat of an ignored stat.

Likely your seeing it as high as your modem is making use of US2/3 for the increased upload speed.

Line itself doesn't look too bad. a master filter would help out the connection however.
