Linux: What make and model of older Smart phone?

No need to leave the phone off all the time just go into settings and turn off mobile data

John

It's an older unbranded generic phone.  I only use it in an emergency.  Data was meant to be off and confirming a top up was meant to be on.  I've transferred the card to another phone but once the credit has gone probably won't be using 2Degrees again.  Their response wasn't what I consider helpful (or professional) - but then NZ Telecos aren't known for customer service.

@adw Not sure what sort of response you are expecting when using an unbranded generic phone clearly not purchased from 2degrees

Can't blame the carrier here they did not force you to put the SIM into the handset they have zero control over

John

Call me old fashioned John but I think if a company offers a service, then it's fair to expect a certain level of service. It's certainly not a condition of service to use a 2Degrees phone.

@adw Then using the SIM in some random generic handset that could contain Virus / Malware is high on the cards and that is not a carriers issue!

John

This thread reminds me of the Philippines. Prepaid credit (Called "load" there) would literally disappear overnight.

In my books anything is possible - especially when I have seen it happen before.

This has been seen 100's of times on Geekzone customers complaining about Prepay credit disappearing " for no reason " and it's the same reason customer has a Smart phone with mobile data enabled and back ground applications connecting to the web!

I have investigated this myself many times in my years at Vodafone and shown proof to customers that the handset was connecting to the web for updates ETC..........

While that might be the case, the OP's first post and your immediate reply indicates you have it predetermined but it's not neccessarily the answer.

In my book, no possibility is off the table when it comes to mobile phone companies. And especially not with 2degrees. Not after the way they treated me.

I can tell you now it is the answer and would put money on it! You clearly are adding ZERO value to this thread!

2degrees is a good choice for you then, disregarding anything else and all... That is exactly the same attitude they gave me.

Also shows my post suggesting the OP switch was good advice.

That attitude is rampant within 2degrees. Stuff the customer.

The other 2 are also pretty bad but 2degrees is in a class of their own.

February last year was about the time they lost the plot.

Thanks John but the SIM hasn't been used in 'some random generic handset', I've owned the phone from new.  I've never had an issue with it before. My concern when I enquired was that they said they had had an issue their end and that they had had a fault.  I was trying to find out if other people had had any problems over that period.  There are many variables that can affect things but it is how a company responds that differentiates them.  Carriers have responsibilities too.

I fully get what you are saying. However, I don't think there is any real and suatainable resolution outside of what I suggested and you also said in a previous post you were intending to switch.

John is right to the extent that data is the usual culprit, but it sure ain't the only possibility. But I can't see any traction here. Sometimes it's better just to walk away.

Also Vodafone has better coverage in my observation.

Spark has the best customer service. That hasn't always been the case. In the past they were a pain to deal with and 2degrees was the best.

But right now, VF and Spark would be my picks, in that order.

There are no kinds of faults that will result in 2degrees charging you for data that hadn't used any more than could be a fault with your fruit bowl that would cause oranges to disappear that hadn't been eaten, nor a fault that would buy a value pack that you are not subscribed to. That's just not how it works. There can definitely be faults that cause it not to renew a value pack or charge you for data that it should, however.

So, I apologise if someone gave you that impression incorrectly.

Who alleged it was due to data?

Here is the original post:

adw:

I have a 2Degrees prepay that I don't use very often.  When I turned it on recently it ate $40 worth of credit very quickly.  I thought my account couldn't recharge without me confirming and when I contacted them about it they said that they'd had a fault but refused with their system but refused to refund the money.  When I pursued it they said it wasn't set up like that - which all seems rather strange.  When I asked them why it had consumed so much all they could say was that data had been used (not very helpful and thank goodness my phone is usually off).  Has anyone else had problems please?  Thanks.
