Logs show delay is on Amazon's end:

After further investigation from the system guys, we found that we had not noticed this new IP address from Amazon and as such Greylisting was kicking in and delaying the message:

We have updated this IP address as Amazon and are checking all our public Amazon IP addresses are up to date, so there should be no delays going forward.

Well, thanks for confirming my diagnosis ;-)

Three concerns about Orcon's processes kind of leap out...

(1) If your logging system makes you confident that the delay is at Amazon's end - and then you find it's at your end...
It looks like your logging system could do with an over-haul.

(2) If you are greylisting most new addresses until proven innocent, and this adds hours to email delivery...
That's rather a problem for me.

(3) Given Amazon's explosive growth rate, I would assume that they might be adding new email servers daily.
Given that there are strong clues to their identity in the server names - couldn't ID of new Amazon sources be automated ?

I was going to suggest that this sounds exactly like greylisting in action, never been a fan of greylisting for this exact reason
