@lchiu7 its sounds like you got the answer from the guys above :)

2degrees does use PPPoE and you are more than welcome to use your own modem.

We can provide you with the correct settings to enter in.

Flick us a Message and we can get you signed up.

Cheers ^SW

Thanks I called to get more information around if I signed up, would there be a period of no service as I transitioned and was told there would not be. So I signed up on the phone to your fastest plan with the $200 credit :-)

The $399 disconnection fee is a bit steep though given that you also reduce the $200 sign up bonus. This was in the email

** Standard ETC applies. Also, $200 joining credit repayable on a pro-rated basis if you leave or downgrade within the first 12 months.

Can't see why the there is such an ETC when there is no deal on for 12 months apart from the $200 which is also rebated on Early Termination.

Still since I have time to rethink since no service has been provisioned yet :-)

I find 2degrees fiber very good, no problems and good service. Just check the website every year or so to check if the price has changed, like all providers they can leave people on a grandfathered plan that may cost more than newer cheaper plans.

I decided to order the Fritzbox also since it's free. PPPOE seems easy enough on the Asus Router but I also have to set VLAN 10 and that I did not apparently need with BigPipe so I am not sure if the router has that option. Nothing was obvious when I took a quick look. The PPPOE setting had no VLAN option.

Im not sure what getting tired of an RSP means. Im with Spark. I never need to call them with an issue. If I did, I can call or chat or email. The internet always works. Yes, I am in fibre so thats a help, but how can you get tired of an RSP? When I was with Genesis for power, then EK, it still works, same thing?

How about

1. no phone support so on several occasions when my Internet went down, it would take 5 hours before somebody would even respond

2. Tried to upgrade to their top plan and get 3 months free. They rejected me for some reason

Was this the reason?

"The 3 months free broadband offer (“the offer”) applies to your first 3 months base plan charges on your new Bigpipe account. The offer is only available to customers who do not currently purchase broadband from Bigpipe and have not had broadband with Bigpipe within the last 90 days. The offer available to customers who sign up from 18 December 2018 to 31 March 2019."

from: http://pages.bigpipe.co.nz/bigpipe-3-month-free-terms/

It's completely reasonable to use worse support than expected as a justification for moving, but you're being utterly unreasonable by trying to suggest you were rejected for the 3 months "for some reason" when 15 seconds looking at the site clearly indicated why that was the case.

Cheers - N

Glad to see this thread. I Just switched over to 2degrees as well purely because of the lacklustre support from Spark and the uncompetitive pricing. Rarely had troubles with my 2degrees mobile, and I used to work for them so I trust them a bit more too.

Though when I did chat to spark about leaving and what was needed of me, they were very helpful on that occasion lol

I moved from Spark to 2Degrees a few weeks ago.

The performance on 1gig fiber is just as good and the phone is way better offering a lot of features.

The Fritzbox router performs as good as the Asus RT-AC68U I was using including torrenting.

I highly recommend 2Degress.

Regards, John.

I’m happy on 2degrees.

Rang them to join, and hicup with phone at start, both times phone answered in a couple of minutes, and phone hicup was fixed immediately.

2degrees $200 is for only new customers to though, so after contract is up I’d say their view will be same as Big Pipes.

If someone wants to chase joining credits will probably need to change ISP’s each contract,
I wasn’t chasing joining credit, was just finding Spark uncompetitive for the now above 120gig user, and them not matching Christchurch deal of other ISP’s. Watching streaming services going to do 120 easily.

I looked at my monthly data use recently - 99% streaming services - we hit a new record of 760GB in Dec. Family of 4 (2 kids 10,13). Can't see how anyone with kids would manage to use just 120G.
Infact can't see how anyone who streams media could use less than 120G by themselves.

When 2degrees adjusted their pricing last year I got an email stating that my pricing has changed (for the better) and the discount would apply from the next billing month. I was in contract then so it is good to see plan changes being applied across all their customers.

Just like other providers - the $200 credit is something I got when I joined so I have no issues sticking around and not badgering them for another credit. I'm out of contract now with no intention of changing ISP's anytime soon.

@KrazyKid I looked at my use and found that most of my use (~1.5tb) is Netflix / YouTube.

1.5TB/month is an average (if it was all DL which it's not) of 4.5Mbps. Coincidentally that's nearly what I would predict as an average bitrate for Youtube/Netflix. (Yes I have a 4K system too and even trying to watch 4K stuff a lot, most isn't)

I don't believe most of 1.5TB/month is Netflix and Youtube. With 4 people always watching different screens, that's 6 hours a day, every day, each.

Netflix and Youtube make up around half of our usage (~300 out of ~600) for two people on VDSL, and it's not like we watch that much. Bearing in mind that 'most' only has to be half or more, it's totally conceivable that a family use 750G streaming netflix and youtube IMO. Especially if all of that content is in 4K (netflix 4K bitrate is apparently around 15mbps)
