Bit of speculation on my part rather than substantial fact, but i have been trying to arrange an interview with NZ comms for a while now (see older forum). I eventually got in touch with them only to be told they weren't recruiting business functions right now. I work in the CRM arena and have been through a mobile telco roll out in the UK - i have to say (as a very general and broad guide) that it takes at least a year to plan and implement business functions properly.

My guess is a very small launch at first (preferred users/testers) followed by a full commercial roll out towards the end of next year. This is what we did with 3 in the UK.

Personally I can't wait that long to come over and enjoy your sunshine so im looking for a job elsewhere :-)

Papers filed with the Economic Development Ministry show NZ Communications has so far built 50 cellsites. It has plans for 1320, which would give it 80 per cent coverage of the country, and is believed to want a few hundred before it launches a service.

By this article it states that they only have 50 of a required 450 (equal to 10% coverage?) sites active. That seems pathetic after 8 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong

I also beleive that once they have the 10% they need to roam, that they also have to build sites at a certain rate annually, this to keep roaming until they have enough sites to provide agreed coverage over an agreed time.

If its taken them this long to build 50 sites they may be reassesing the agreeements they signed with Vodafone or will face financial penilties. Either option which will please Vodafone no end.

Not quite, but almost.

The 10% you're refering to was in the Telco Act - comanies that want mandated roaming access to another network used to have to build either a network that covers 10% of the NZ population or a certain number of cellsites AND lodge its plans to build a nationwide network with the Commerce Commission.

Vodafone and NZ Comms signed a roaming agreement that supercedes that - it allows NZ Comms to roam onto Vodafone's network immediately, without the 10% network build requirement. It's a commercial agreement.

They could be offering service today, as far as I'm aware, but are holding off till they build enough of their own network that they have a more profitable income stream.
