Does anyone have a view on how the Fritzbox compares with the Ubiquiti Amplifi? The latter is cheap enough that I would be tempted to just buy my own if it's more robust.

@alasta If you're talking Mesh then the Fritz is totally fine for this. I've only used the wired mesh option personally however.

If you're on Gigabit then Fritz all the way. If you're on less than Gigabit (or don't mind getting ~800Mbit) then AmpliFi. $160 from 2degrees for another Fritz is a damn good deal really as you can use them in wired / wireless mesh + makes VoIP available on it also.

Thanks for that. My needs are very basic as it'll be in a 40sqm apartment so only need one AP, and I won't have gigabit or VOIP.

Based on that it sounds like either unit will do the job fine, so might as well get the Fritzbox and then I have the benefit of an ISP supported router.

Can't compare it with Ubiquiti but have just set up a wireless mesh using 3 Fritzbox 7490s. Speeds are consistent now, throughout 250m2 3 story house which previously had many dead spots, which is what I was aiming for.

Walking around with my (2x2 antenna ac) phone I tend to get connections of 300-800 mbps. Throughput is more like around 100-200mbps.

Watching the mesh connections while logged into the router, it seems to handover to nearest one quite actively and seamlessly so overall I would say it works fine.

Of course it would probably be faster to just use wired access points or wired mesh, but the cabling will have to wait for another day.
