from memory I believe he lives on the shore too! ;-)

Also, any more detail on the type of hardware you're using for the trial? router, switches, DAC, CAT or fibre leads?

Based on the fact that they are using the ONT CPE, past there it will be Copper 10G to customer's network.

Not exactly the cheapest of options, but nor is using anything but the Chorus ONT (go look for routers with enough ports and cpu power to route it)

I just can't see any significant consumer demand for this. Who even has a home network that runs that fast? 1gbps or wifi AC is about as fast as things get.

My house is wired for cat6 , which can in theory go to 10Gbps, but there is no cost effective hardware options.

I suppose, if you had 10gbps from the ONT, to a 10gbps router/switch.... it means you could have 10 devices hardwired to the switch that can be running simultaneously at  full 1gbps speed.

So, I suppose this will be a business product, rather than for gamers and parents with teenagers as the orcon marketing suggests.

Didn't someone mutter something about home computers never needing more the Kb's of memory?

Human perceptual limits will come into play very soon. Sure, I can see the difference between 1080P and 4k, and I might be able to see the difference between 4k and 8k - but I doubt anyone's eyes are good enough to discriminate 8k/16k. Sure at some point there might be 240fps 8k holograms from 3600 angles, but I still think that we're going to start seeing human perceptual limits put the brakes on resolution at least.

Cheers - N

hmm I just assumed they would have provided the the trial customers with the 10gb network setup for consistency during the trials so there could be a few different combinations after the the ONT (understand from the ONT to router it will be rj45)

It's all of a lot of interest to me as I have a small 10gb network at home and have played around with a few different option

Just not too sure where I am going to stuff all these packets that pour out of the ont at that rate, guess they will just have to flood the lounge........

I'd be surprised if they did at the costs involved to be honest...

That's the thing nobody sees about breaking the 1G barrier. the hardware costs get exceptionally high.

While as someone in IT, that's just the cost of early adopting, to a consumer its a heck no.

Short of usecases that generally exist in a datacenter, I'm still not really sure what this sort of connection will actually apply to where it's used in the Consumer world.

In Business sure, but then that's where you would be looking at BS3 with SLA's...

If we send one of these 10Gbit links over to Australia, we can probably run their whole NBN network off it lol :)

They might even have real world latency then ;)

hope to hear more detail from Orcon on this.. as to me it would be surprising if they didn't provide equal equipment for testing..

Personally I'd like to know how they plan to test :-)

While testing 10gbps, not in a lab, is an interesting discussion and might be something that some trialists/RSPs want to to tackle, it isn't the point of the trial :)

https://sp.chorus.co.nz/stories/10gpon-trial

"The 10GPON trial is a production-based trial that allows end customers to experience 10GPON and for retail service providers to provide useful feedback to Chorus to support and shape the development of the 10GPON product."

It is about customer experience, end user equipment, and feedback for what a future product might looks like.  We open up the full 10gbps, RSPs can then play around within that however they like.

Our product team are working closely with the trial RSPs.

We aren't intending the feedback to be "we got 8.6gbps", "well, we only got 5.4Gbps" etc.

If I pay for 10Gbps, I expect to get 10Gbps 24*7
