So looking at the device offered can only hit 1Gbit/s, well 4 devices can now all get 1Gbit/s at the same time, but 1 device can't get 4Gbit(assuming the end server is capable).

Really need to have a device (ONT) with at least 2 10Gb ports.

Ummmm, did you mis the 10GbaseT interface?

Cyril

My current Orcon contract finished this month but I just cannot come up with a plausible reason to get this and that is annoying me.

is "so you can add your speedtest result to your geekzone signature" a good enough reason?

;-)

I don't do that now but bragging rights against Australian and UK based friends and family now that's a different story.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I read that as where the Fibre gets connected as in!

If its a user accessible, that's great!

There is 1 x 10Gig (Copper) Port and 4 x 1Gig Ports.

Plus the GPON Port.

I'm personally surprised they set the price so low. It really does show the expectation that most people will get nowhere near maxing out their connections - much like current 1Gbps users really don't have average throghput figures that are any different to 100Mbps users.

What's the upload? Could see video editors/Youtube people potentially using this if those services can accept that transmission speed. While many servers have had 10GBase-T for a while now only recently I saw the new mac mini has it. PCI-E card seems around $200:

The underlying wholesale Hyperfibre service is symmetric.

I guess we didn't need unbundling this time.

Mellanox Connect-x3, for like $80 ish from ebay. some cable and connectors from fs.com and you're good to go

that's a good 200$ for a card, may aswell get a proper one at that point.

Remember the ONT is a Copper RJ45. you can't just grab a DAC or SC cable.

Apart from gamers getting this because "it'll decrease their ping" I personally don't see a use for your average home user.

If a residential user "needs" this then they are clearly in the top 1% of an ISP's customer-base and are more than likely doing something dodgy with the connection. I personally won't be getting this as it means all new equipment for me and hardly utilize my Gigabit connection as it is.

But more posting to say I really wish that Chorus would offer a Fibre SFP module for these plans. For people like me (in the prosumer market) who have more advanced networks I think this is better. However, I read somewhere that the ONT can go into a full bridge to allow for another router to take care of things also.

and then the end user plugs it into their 200$ routerboard and goes why does it only do 1G! must complain!
