Ok, I got a reply from the 2 degrees customer feedback people.  They said:

  • The DD\CC authority is a recent change that applies to all customers.  They said they have our best interests at heart and they are trying to protect us from taking on unwanted debt.  Yeah right, I said if thats their worry they should make the phones cheaper.
  • If you ask nicely then the credit team will review it and if approved will allow you to go on a plan without a DD\CC authority.
  • I raised the point that they are discriminating against their existing customers because new customers get $200 discount on the phone vs $100 for existing.  They said that it's not that they don't love their existing customers, it's just that they love the new ones more.

So I have gone off the Note 20 idea.  Holding out for a folding phone I think.  It's too god dam much (as Flossy Carter would say), particularly when I have to choose between 120hz or 1080p.

I might go back on the 2 degrees mobile plan vs staying on prepaid or changing to skinny.  I still have a bunch of rollover data which would be a shame to waste.  Being on the $30 plan is about the same as prepaid when you consider the $10 a month discount on the broadband.

On the other hand skinny has 4g in rural areas and for $34 a month you can get unlimited data.  The 2 degrees data sharing is very handy I would say.

And just to add to that - I was required to setup a CCA when I bought an iPhone XS last year, and I work for them, so it's not like they don't know how to come after me if I don't pay.

This makes sense.  They know that you don't have job security during the economic downturn.

The phone isn't really worth 2.3k and they are locking you into that telco via the contract or the interest free finance.

Whether you think the phone is worth $2300 or not is beside the point. I wouldn't pay $2300 for one either. Nevertheless, Samsung sells them at whatever price Samsung wants, and clearly, enough people think it's worth it.

If you have $2300 spare cash there's nothing stopping you from walking into a carrier or Samsung dealer, dropping it down, and walking out with no further strings attached. But to expect to get one in your hands for $0 and not be on the hook for some time until the carrier (or Samsung, for that matter) has made their investment back is frankly laughable.

It was nearly a year ago. And even if that was the case, doesn't that prove my point?

The OP would "be on the hook" for some time - he would sign a credit agreement.

2degrees can, and should, manage their business however they want. The OP should do whatever suits themselves best. If they object to a DDA they should leave. Neither has any loyalty to each other. One is a company, the other is a consumer, it's not a personal relationship.

If enough customers refuse to sign direct debit agreements and leave 2degrees will change their policy as it'll be costing them significant revenue. It's the only way it changes.

I don't like DDAs. There's been a few times where I've had to put in a credit card to sign up. I just ask them to remove it after. I like paying myself with my banking.

They don't let you walk out with it for $0. Your have to pay $300 because their finance limit is $2k.

Also it's not mad because there precious finance policy up until recently was to not require a cc or direct debit authority.

It's just that they have recently decided to stop trusting their customers.

Well, I don't know what you think should happen, but all I can suggest is that if you don't like the terms then there is nothing stopping you from buying it outright.

The thing that's stopping me buying it outright is the artificially inflated price that's offset by the $200 "discount" you get for putting it on their finance.

What I think should happen is that existing customers get the same "discount" as new customers.  Then nobody would have to do the move to prepaid and start a new account madness.
