As others have said, the general consensus around here is avoid MR like the plague. The two most recommended ISPs are 2degrees and Voyager.

I would add Vodafone to the list of ISPs to Avoid - Their behavior reported by users on these forums forcing people onto FWA is pretty awful

I am with them for Mobile but only because of Red Share and $7 daily roaming when wife and I go to the US (not that we are doing that at the moment)

Vodafone does have pros and cons. It arguably has the worst frontline customer service experience of any ISP I've ever had to deal with, but if you can get through to the right people things do get resolved. I'm a currently a customer again because I can generally live with their abysmal customer service in exchange for the fact the actual connection quality is good, and they've given me some VERY good discounts.

Thanks to all who've pen to paper digitally on this. I'm swerving now towards 2Degrees. Nobody has a bad word for them. Good on price for a 900/400, with their current special including Amazon Prime TV for the contract's duration.

Again .... thanks.

U.

Just be mindful (and it wont affect the average Joe) that 2degrees uses CG-NAT which means your router wont have a public IP address

For day to day use this will be fine but if you run servers, port forward for anything, or some games, it wont work

I am appropriately forewarned! I make great use of Getflix's vpn & smartdns service. I'm wholly reliant on it! Will that be affected? Also my son, an occasional gamer will need some reassurances! CG-NAT for Dummies??

at home you have one "public" IP address and all your devices at home use this IP address when talking to the internet, your router does network address translation (NAT) converting your "public" IP address to your internal network IP addresses.

CG-NAT does this again on a larger scale, your ISP will use 1 "public" IP address and have multiple customers behind it using NAT as mentioned above, your router then does NAT again for your home network. the problem is you cant use port forwarding in most instances on a CG-NAT connection as your services use the public IP address which is shared by many people.

If he's merely playing games he should be fine. If he's hosting servers for game, then yes, it would be an issue.

This has also been my experience.  I saw the latest 2 degrees offer and was going to switch, but VF came to the party, matched the offer and gave me a good discount (also currently advertised), it was a no-brainier to stay.  Help desk can be painful and requires a little patience but the service is robust.  Not sure what "FWA" stands for, but can't recall being forced into anything.

FWA = Fixed Wireless Access, so in this context he's talking about the general push to move people form copper to cellular internet, and more specifically the alleged incidents of hardsell/without consent migration. I've actually heard more chatter about Spark "forcing" people to switch to than Vodafone doing so, but it's all hearsay. I suspect in either case it's probably 3rd party/contractor commission sales people being pushy rather than a nefarious master plan by the telcos.

We are with 2D for BB, use Getflix’s DNS service, and our sons have a PS4 and Switch, so in a similar situation to you. We were switched over to CGNAT many months ago and haven’t noticed a thing (in fact, only knew after the 2D rep here on GZ checked for me - we hadn’t been told prior). I think you should be fine.

Given their decent reputation for customer service, reliable connection, and the current $75/$85 deal including Prime, I reckon it’s a great choice.

Yeah I saw that thread. It's the first I've seen or heard of any sort of bulk migration, everything else I'd heard of until now was individual cases. Vodafone's latest effort on the other hand I'm in full agreement with you is a shocker, and clearly not just a miscommunication or a pushy sales person.

Well I’m trying them out now waiting to get connected today. Switched from 2deg to MR because of their open term plan. Paid about 6 weeks before connection date and have had to contact them at least 5 times because they can’t get a single thing right.

Contacting them sucks as they only offer LiveChat to the Philippines as an option, there’s a number to call if you want to sign up as a new customer but if you’re an existing customer it blacklists your number and plays a snide pre recorded message telling you to go to LiveChat and ends the call.

The online sales people are OBNOXIOUS, thirsty, clueless weirdos who will commandeer your browsing experience on their website entirely unsolicited.

In 10+ years of using different ISPs I’ve probably contacted support desks twice. God knows how MR will be once I’m actually connected, lol.

@superman Why did you switch from a great ISP to one that has been proven to not be great many, many times over by multiple people? Voyager offer only open term plans too and are actually a great ISP.

Good luck with your move...

Because I’m stupid... but yeah, just changed to them because my 12 months contract ended with 2deg and MR has a no contract open term option. If there’s no hitches after a month I’ll keep paying them otherwise I’ll head back to 2degrees or the other ISP that was good but to me, Orcon.
