no one has answered  why internet is too cheap in nz

and don't say cause America prices are higher

Because we have a full fiber to the premise - None of this Fiber to This (Node/Gated Community/Basement/Riser/Whatever) , it cost a fortune to install, and when someone puts up their prices by a buck people still complain!

There have actually been yearly price increases on lower speed UFB plans since 2014ish that have not been passed on every year by RSP's

When shiny new expensive to build fibre is nearly the same price as bought-and-paid-for copper services, the price of one or the other is not reflective of the true costs. Given that the Govt poured 1.5 billion into subsidising UFB, (if it was commercial viable a private company would have already been doing it) it doesn't take a chartered accountant to figure out residential customers aren't paying the true cost of UFB.

And the UK - FTTN is even marketed as "Fibre Broadband" with an average speed of 60mbps

And upto a year ago I'd have lover 60mpbs. I've never been in a property with access to anything above ADSL2 until recently.

Most of my relatives are still on ADSL and don't see a compelling reason to upgrade as it is sufficient for their needs.

....right, so we are getting unbelievably good performance for the price we are paying - although the comment I replied to didn't want to hear about overseas comparisons.

For somethings that’s too cheap, the LFC’s are lowering the price of the 1Gbp/s. It’s only the lower plans they are putting the price up on.

If it’s too cheap why are they lowering the price of the 1Gbp/s plans and only increasing the lower ones.

When I saw the email I nearly choked when I saw it was only a dollar! Expected about $4.

Still a happy Orcon customer.

You are meant to be out protesting! Making it clear you are not going to pay another $12 per year for world class broadband

It’s all very well comparing what we pay for internet with other countries, but don’t forget we are also right up there with lack of housing affordability and cost of living vs wages/income.

I’m sure many families would love to pay more for services like Fibre, but most are already living on a shoestring and being paid peanuts.

It is a yearly CPI increase.

Quite sneaky coming from the previous retail-minus regime with quarterly adjustments which afaik were based on Telecom's bundled products and joining offers so prices didn't just go up each time. Perhaps if these monthly UFB access charges were itemised or even a separate bill from Chorus (like the separate JetStream and ISP charges at one stage) it would make consumers more aware.
