Xtra down here seems to be on a par (actually marginally faster)

Takarada, if you are doing speed tests and getting that speed you're on ADSL2+ or fibre. Your actual speed will be under 8- based on your results, maybe 5-6Mbps.

paradoxsm, the only way to know if your line gets faster with Telecom or with Orcon is to switch and run the same test with the same gear on the same line.

I switched and increased by about 30% with Orcon.

Exact same gear (3com 3cdr super compatible and reliable ADSL2+ routers) with custom low noise master lowpass filters.
Exact same line conditions, identical Noise margins, balance and impedance/capacitance (must be a fluke) and almost same distance from exchange (24 metres more in Wellington based on GPS co-ords) Orcon supplied in Auckland, Telecom supplied in Wellington.

I think this is the standard rate for ADSL if the line is clean.
I am running that isposure program which gives 10/1 Mb/s
Of course that is not what I get internationally but within NZ I do.

From my modem status page:
Data Rate down 11441
Data Rate up 1031 kbps

This is Christchurch, we don't have any ADSL2+

I am happy with the connection speed but it is very expensive($154)
