looks like some cat cables - (lan cables)

some rg6 cables (tv)

if you want just wifi and lan from the router, ont in cabinet - lan link to location in house - router in location in house

if you want many wired lan ports, if you have 2 lan cables going to one location, you can use one as a loop back if your router is located in house somewhere, if you dont have that, a powerline av kit can acheive this, bring the live lan back to the cabinet, then a small switch to connect all the cables to the lan,

rg6 is for the tv if you want to have freeview or sky the appropriate tech will use these cables,

many possabilities,

your cabinet is very small, most are much larger, can hold a ont and router and patch panel, i would reccommend you only store ont in a cabinet that size. some people use floating shelf above cabinet to hold a router, but be careful not to screw into cables behind the wall, usually cables go straight up from where they come out of the wall.

I understand the ONT will be in the cabinet and from my understanding the ONT needs to be connected to the router?

If the ONT is placed in the wall then I'll need to run a cable down to the router am I right?

So how do the other network outlet from the wall work?Does it connect all the way back into the ONT but that doesn't sound right?

Linux: Wonder if the last owner / tenant took it when they left

It's a new subdivison, new house so I am the first owner.

I guess ONT is not provided for new properties?

No it is not, that needs to be installed by Chorus - inform Orcon you do not have an ONT and that needs to be installed first, once that has been installed than Orcon will send out your router.

ONT wont go in that tiny thing, THey may mount it beside it but if the builder that left that abortion hasnt provided the lead in or a suitable duct it will go wherever they can get it to.

You need to find out why they have left a half finished installation of that ridiculously undersized cabinet with nothing put to a patch panel or even terminated at all. That's assuming you paid for data wiring ready to go.

The one I know of that had nothing installed but a single cat5 or 6 to the ETP were offered it on the inside wall opposite the ETP location and nothing else.

I've dealt with several cabinets of this size and it will fit the ONT just fine - there's probably a hybrid cat5e/fibre cable in there somewhere for the ONT. When I've faced this size of box I've just terminated plugs onto the CAT cables accordingly, sat the router somewhere where there are two ports and backfed to a small switch in the cabinet. All fits in. Not the most ideal, not sure why they dont go for at least a 20" model, but it will work provided there is a hybrid cable there (or maybe even a conduit running to the bottom of it that we can't see)

Is that the new ont with the antenna that is quite a bit larger or the old one?

Correct - if installed nicely, it will fit with a small form factor switch. I usually screw some velcro to the back and wrap it around the switch to hold it in place (making sure the screws don't penetrate the back) - the size of the cabinet is 14" -- Always prefer more space of course, but when you have lemons you make lemonade! Or try to

The newer model ONTs are actually easier to get nicely snug in these cabinets given the patch lead between the front and back - the only ONT I'm not sure would work (because I've not seen one yet) is the model used for hyperfibre, I assume that is different again

Even if the electrician doesn't care about the other cables you'd think he at least install a power socket that you could plug a router or ONT plug pack into.

There is one, maybe even two.

The white plug pack is an ONT one. See the problem?

wickedlolipoo:

On the date of install which was today nobody called. I called Orcon up at 11am asking if the tech is coming and the live chat told me the tech might be a bit late.

At 3pm when I called they told me chorus system thinks I have an ONT and a tech will not be required .

Technical support told me I have to wait until tonight 9pm before they can raise a fault.

I specifically asked Orcon to send a tech out on the day of install during sign up because I need him to look at the panel .There's no ONT at my new house.

I guess I'll call Orcon first thing tomorrow morning and if they can't rectify the problem with chorus I'll go with another ISP.

If Orcon is telling you that the Chorus system "thinks you have an ONT", then that is usually the queue for your RSP to reconfirm that they have run their order on the correct address. If the address is definitely correct, you say there's no ONT, but Chorus system says there is, then there must be an address record issue.

If you PM me the address you told Orcon to place the order on (and your Orcon order reference if you have it), I'll have a look in the system for you. It's not uncommon for developers to give Chorus a subdivision plan with proposed street numbers, we do the fibre build, then the developer renumbers the sections, throwing our records into disarray...
