Every Xiaomi device is crippled by firmware which is a little buggy and has some in my opinion dodgy practices such as increasingly annoying advertising as the device gets older. I would only get one if it was well supported by LineageOS.

Sorry going a bit of topic here mate.
As much as it might be buggey I am trying to find what specific app or part of the phone OS is causing the problem so I can fix it.

There is no way I am installing another OS on my phone.
Way over my head and I can see it leading to other problems.

So how often were the txts sent?

Have there been any more since you had the charges wiped?

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

I only did the changes yesterday...but I looked at the 2 deg call log and the last time i sent the phantom txt was two weeks ago.
Only picked up on it myself yesterday as well.
So maybe the problem is resolved.
Will keep an eye on my bill.
Would be good to know the cause though.

A handset firing off SMS to a +44 number is not ' Buggy '

Try and go to Settings/Applications and if there is "SIM Activation Service" make sure that has SMS turned off. This is another useful link.

Sounds like the phone may do this on a restart if it thinks the sim isn't 'activated'.

I would turn most of the MICloud services off you don't use in particular Mi Message.

There are easy guides to debloat MIUI and remove most of the Mi services that aren't available in NZ and just hog battery and space anyway.

I sympathize with OP not wanting to remove MIUI altogether and flash something else(this is a task that's not too hard but if you've never flashed something before, I wouldn't recommend doing it on a flagship, do it on something you don't care about), but I found MIUI to be quite invasive, buggy and just a massive mess so I very much ditched MIUI as soon as I could, never turned back.

PBTech officially sell the handset and Xiaomi is their official retailer with NZ warranty and support for many things other than phones. It's not an import. :)
