2d customer here. Not in Waiuku, am in Hibiscus Coast.

I did notice some time (months) ago that evenings were slower (from Speedtests). However, recently that seems to have been resolved. I figured 2d had upped their capacity.

This is a result from just now: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/3ea73155-24a1-4ecc-add9-4359e0ff0c66

Cheers for that! Exactly the type of info I've been looking for. Still seeing somewhat degraded download performance here, while upload remains strong. I think I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days and give a ring to 2degrees along with my findings.

300/93 on a 300 / 100 plan here in Wellington 8.50pm Sat even. I wonder if it's just your neighbourhood, maybe you have people in your street using heaps of bandwidth at that time like a dozen families all streaming a few 1080p streams. Not sure if that would make a difference, each house might get their own dedicated slice of time / bandwidth.

Just did a speedtest over WiFi to the 2degrees Auckland server and got 710 down and 430 up

Try a few different servers. Perhaps you're hitting one that is congested, not your connection.

My test was against the 2d server in Auckland. I actually run it from a linux terminal on a PC with ethernet connection. If you're doing that the server ID is 5539

I've tried a few different ones, along with https://fast.com. Same results - 1 Gbps line speed during the day, with a large drop in the evening.

This could well be a local issue - GPON is shared at normally 2.5Gbit on either a 32:1, 16:1 or 8:1 split depending on your location and when your Fibre build-out was meaning there is a chance you may see peak time slow downs especially if you've got a whole lot of people on Gigabit connections really hammering it. I think Enable and UFF used 32:1 splits for quite a while, while Chorus have been normally 16:1 or 8:1 depending on location.

For me, I am basically getting Gigabit 24/7 with no noticeable speed drops during the evenings. The fact your Speedtests are to Auckland which is national bandwidth could well mean PON saturation over a problem with 2degrees, I'm not saying that is the case, but Gigabit UFB is actually still best effort, we've just normally got it very good here in NZ where Chorus operate a nearly congestion free network :)

Often a 16:1 split. And in some cases 32. Depends on the network itself.

I don't think it would be a shortage of bandwidth, It could be that the handover is running hot at that time, or the there is some congestion on the chorus network, or your CPE is just not up to the task, maybe it's been on for months and has its knickers in a knot. I had a CPE on some sort of software packet switching instead of using the hardware. You might find that they may be doing a migration to another handover.

You can try another CPE to rule out the CPE aspect. Or reboot the CPE upgrade firmware etc.

Either way you are probably paying for a product with a 2.5Mbit CiR. Unless you purchase something like Bitstream 4 1Gbit. Your connection will always be at the mercy of how busy the chorus network is at the time (and its not very busy there should be plenty of capacity). Notice how the products display their PEAK TIME average speeds.

The other option is you could purchase an XGS PON product. (AKA Hyperfibre) if it is available in your area. No one will be on it..

In the grand scheme of things this is a bit of a non-issue. And I would be grateful you have internet like you do here. In Australia you buy NBN and its sold to you as fibre, but its really fibre to the curb. You get about 50mbit and you pay through the nose for it and it can still suffer from weather problems.

I'm looking forward to the day that I can get Hyperfibre from 2degrees. The 2 Gbps symmetrical will be nice.

Pretty unlikely seeing as it's fine during the remainder of the day.

hmm this does seem to be an odd one and possibly as people have pointed out quite localised. I can say that our handovers in Auckland are no where near congestion, so we would need you to log a ticket if we are to drill down into the specifics around your connection etc.
