No, not really OT, I did check the wiki looking for info about ADSL modulation used by various ISPs, but did not spot the section you mention, could you post the link?
Was wondering if problem was related to modulation, trying to figure out if Orcon were using annex M. Anyway, some informative comments have come from this thread so far, once again, if anyone watching has some experience with these sort of connectivity issues, please post, it's all info that might be useful to someone out here (or there!).

The MSANS in the exchange support Annex M but we currently don't have them enabled.

Annex A is the modulation type supported

DjShadow: slightly OT, would it be worth noting on the nzconnections wiki with the LLU ISP's what best chipset works best with that ISP?

e.g Telecom Wholesale = Broadcom & Alcatel Lucent
Orcon = Siemens & Infineon
Vodafone = Huawei

Good idea, especially with people moaning about what chipset/brand modem would be best for which ISP. I'll add it soon, onto the plan comparisons.

I have a Broadcom chipset wireless router (TP-Link) that works well with Orcon+ and cost less than $100.

I suspect it would be more useful to note which chipsets don't work well.

I had a DrayTek Vigor 2820n which was rock solid on a Telecom Wholesale ADSL service but as soon as I switched to Orcon LLU it started dropping it's connection 5-10 times per day - nothing else changed but the smarts it was connected to in the exchange and everything back from there.

I ordered the Orcon HomeHub and it is rock solid. The connection is up for multiple weeks at a time (it has only dropped once in the past month or 6 weeks) and at ~2km from the exchange syncs at around the 20Mbit mark.

Just an update on the addition of the brand/chipset: I've added the chipsets to the Orcon+ and Vodafone Red/Slingshot Big Thing plans on the NZ Connections Comparison page. Decided against putting on the info for Telecom Wholesale plans as that would be too much to add.

FYI I have been switched to ADSL 1 profile, has been stable and reliable with 4yo USR9106 if a little slow (2688 down, 1024 up). The Dynalink RTA1350 is stable too but 940 down doesn't quite satisfy.
When time and $$ permit, I'll look for a router with Siemens or Infineon chipset. Have given up on Linksys WAG200G - robust wireless but simply won't play nice with Orcon LLU ADSL.. Last Linksys I'll waste time on.
