there was a large article/interview in the "channel news" (i think) publication this month that was talking about network progress and a possible launch date in the next few months.  i think it said a large number of sites were active and their staff had grown to the 200+ level. (i'd have to look at it again in the office to confirm what it actually said)

This may come to you as a suprize... But NZ Comms have been saying this for about six months. So which two months is this exactly?

Actually it was the iStart magazine "quarter two 2009" and it was their cover page article "FIELD OF DREAMS in-depth interview with NZ Communications CEO Mike Reynolds".

the company has installed 230 of the 400-500 cellsites it intends to set up in the three main centers and is targeting a launch date "in the next few months"

staff numbers are already ballooning, from aroun 18 two years ago to 200-plus now, and the company now has six buildings to house all this growth

They've just let go a heap of staff and then immediately went on a massive recruitment drive.

One of the other threads indicated that NZ Comms had 'run out of cash' and said that they're letting heaps of people go before the network is even finished and ready.... somewhere else I read that they're going through a massive recruitment drive through May...

I'm picking that the people who are being laid off are all people who were working on the development/rollout of the network and that the new people they're hiring are the staff they plan to use to support their network... This must mean something is getting done?

They are certainly VERY tight lipped, so much so that Telecom Wholesale are finding it a bit tough to actually work out what NZC NEEDS in terms of services....I've heard of people going for jobs there in the last month or so and not getting told anything about their job that might lead to leaked info.

I'm fairly sure their brand will become public in June and services will be available from then.

New mobile entrant shifts launch - AGAIN

I'd put money on them delaying it again, after this.
