willnz: NZC have long said they are not looking for high end users, or data users. They're after the el-cheapo users and I guess they're hoping they can bring enough of them over to make it worthwhile.

There is significant risk in this strategy if, with the growing competitiveness of Vodafone/Telecom for value add services (e.g. data) at the lower end of the market then NZ Comms will just be unable to compete. I guess the main problem they've had is that they have kept putting their network further and further off and technological preferences have begun to change in that time.

Look at Teelcom and CDMA - at the time of its deployment it was probably a fair choice however it is obviously obsolescent now and Vodafone is making a cream off extracting more value from customers. The thing with NZ comms is that the cost of delivering a call/txt to another network (which will be the case 99.99% of the time for the start of their life) they won't be able to price competitively anyway.

Basically their strategy has obsolsed before it has even been implemented and I can't really see how that company will survive considering their targetted product and prevailing market conditions.

When doing a network scan on the phone, I seldom see nzcomms unless I have the phone in dual mode - is this a depressing revelation of their final network or are they leaving the 3g off till they launch? Would be pretty lame if you never get 3g on it.. So lame that they wouldnt be an option as far as I am concerned...

Lame for you maybe and lame for most users here but remember we are a minority. The average Mum, Dad and the kids only call and text, this is reportedly who NZC is targetting (maybe even more the lower use Mum and Dad than the "high text user" kids though I suspect not)

2g is too slow for doing anything like checking mail or sending photos, and dual mode missed way too many calls, plus 2g drops the data connection when you get or make a call.

Interesting comments, and I don't agree. Until the launch of the Bold, there was only one 3G UMTS Blackberry available (the 8707) which was EOS'd some time ago. BlackBerry doesn't really require 3G services for its primary role in life -- I practically live on mine, and I don't care whether I'm on 3G, GPRS, or EDGE. In fact, in the past few days in Europe I have had extremely patchy 3G service.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could win significant business contracts on having a rock solid 2G network that actually works, all the time. This would be for those who only care about low speed data (and BB definitely is) and voice. And no handoff issues between 3G and 2G!

I've used NZC's network a few times as an inbound roamer - my devices almost always choose their network first, because they have the strongest signal at Auckland Airport gates and jetway areas. Their cell footprint has expanded every time I visit Auckland, and I can now hold signal throughout most areas I visit. The only problem is that SMS from Vodafone users to my roaming cell never seem to get delivered, and they don't yet have much in the way of packet data interconnects so roaming GPRS is flaky.
