Update:

I signed up for TNBT last Tuesday. Got an email next day stating it would be connected today. Modem arrived on Wednesday. Got a confirmation text activation yesterday saying it would occur today, then another stating I was online at about 9am today.

Very happy. Came home at lunch & connected up my modem. latency=35ms:DL=14.3**mbps:UL=900kbps. Retried speedtest at 5pm. Latency=23: DL=4.***mbps: UL=888kbps.

Question concerning setting up my network. I connected up the modem to the TPlink 5-port ethernet switch. DSL line was via extension 10m lead to secondary jackpoint. Latency dropped to 125ms with DL=103kbps. I aslo recieved message stating error had occurred. Guess it was due to length fo ping time. One desktop PC connected & on, one client HTPC connected & off, main HTPC connected & on.

Is there any simple diagnostics to check what is causing major decrease in connection? Have switched back to connection on my desktop PC with network disconnected until I can sort it out.

Also, is there an app that can supply accurate, real-time data useage, so I can see what amount of data various types of connections (eg. streaming video) use? I used to use the dial-up connection box to read the data sent & received before I had an umlimited account. Would be nice if there is.

Finally, call me cheapskate, but is there a programme that can block the flash advertising, & any other forms, so it doesn't eat into my data capping? Or doesn't the broadband connection work that way? ie. is data measured the moment it leaves the servers, regardless of whether it is blocked at the point of entry (into the receiving PC).

That's about it: for the time beingLaughing Thanks.

One final thing: do people shut down their browsers everytime they stop surfing to prevent data being refreshed? Cheers.

1gkar: Question concerning setting up my network. I connected up the modem to the TPlink 5-port ethernet switch. DSL line was via extension 10m lead to secondary jackpoint.

This is a bad idea.  The 10m lead will be causing a significant drop in sync, speed of your modem.  However, for the speed to drop so drastically (to 103kbps) it looks like there is something wrong with your secondary jackpoint as well.

What you need to do is connect your modem to the primary jackpoint with as short a cable as possible.  Then extend the Ethernet cable to your PC, rather than the other way around.

1gkar: Also, is there an app that can supply accurate, real-time data useage, so I can see what amount of data various types of connections (eg. streaming video) use?

I use DU Meter for this purpose.  It gives a rolling chart recorder display as well as stopwatch functions.

1gkar:  I used to use the dial-up connection box to read the data sent & received before I had an umlimited account.

The icon for your Local Area Connection (under Network Connections in Control Panel) has a similar function.  Look for the Status info. after right-clicking on the icon.

1gkar: One final thing: do people shut down their browsers everytime they stop surfing to prevent data being refreshed?

It depends on the web site.  Some chew up a lot of data by refreshing periodically; others never do.  I generally close my browser when leaving my PC unattended and then when I return, Firefox has saved all the open tabs for me, a quick refresh on the relevant tabs brings me up-to-date.

Grant,

Thanks for the info & the link. It's just what I was after.

I'm guessing, as you didn't say anything about blocking flash content on webpages, there is nothing available, except the pop-up blockers I already know about. If this is the case, what's the programme of choice?

Thanks again Smile

Some visitors arrived so I didn't get time to answer that bit.

TBH, I don't worry about blocking Flash Content.  The amount of data your typical ad. consumes is not that great, and occasionally, one of them might be of interest (very occasionally though :P ).

Firefox's Popup Blocker does the job just fine and TBH, it's more often recently that I have to unblock a site because there is some info. I want to see which appears in a pop-up box.

The amount of unwanted popups seems to have lessened in recent months, or maybe it's just the kind of web sites I visit Undecided

Could make a good Tui ad, the highlighted part (yeah, right) Wink I really appreciate your concise & informative posts.

I could easily get used to the high download speeds: 2.5 minutes to download some 82mb of Windows updates this morning. Just have to watch running out of data cap halfway through the month.

That's a download speed of 4.5Mbps -- pretty respectable.  Goodonya Slingshot Cool

Surely Slingshot have the option for you to buy an extra data block during the month???

With SNAP, I can login to their portal and add extra data @ $2 per GB with a few mouse clicks.  What do Slingshot offer in this regard?

Yeah, fair comment John.

Actually, I just looked at your profile and I remember your name from somewhere that started with ACI (unless it was a namesake of yours).  If I have made the right connection, it's great to catch up with you again Smile

Anyway, thanks for your kind words earlier and I'm glad to have been of assistance with your move from dial-up to broadband.

By using DU Meter, you should be able to get a good grasp of the types of internet usage which are the most data-intensive.  Any kind of streaming video is the main culprit, together with hefty downloading of music files.  I don't expect you will be into Bit Torrents (at least initially) so that shouldn't be an issue.

My wife and I get by quite happily with a 2GB data cap on our wireless connection, although when we had 3 teenaged kids at home, it was a different story...

ACI? no, it doesn't ring a bell: But I have also met three other namesakes in my time in Jaffa-land.

Regarding bit torrents: actually, I am attempting to DL a particular series season (taken from American Sci-Fi TV) that has NEVER been shown in this country & IS NOT available in any form of purchasable media. I have already bought what is available. It was one reason I decided to upgrade. I am itching for a fix. However, it is extremely slow (18kb/s). Also, I am getting creamed for my uploads, data-wise. Are there any catches about using Bit torrents? ie. eating up data, etc.

Won't go into it here, as it will probably be construed as out of bounds. But if someone could point me to a site that shows how to optimise your settings, it would be well received.

Their plans attract the users who download heavily (free off peak and cheap $ per GB) which I'm sure results in their available international bandwidth basically being maxed out most of the time.

Last time I looked into it they wereusing blue coat traffic management appliances to shape and restrict p2p traffic in order to ensure that normal email and http was not negatively impacted.

Yes bit torrent uses a tons of data (kind of obviously)... typical sizes for the media you're trying to download are between 350mb and 4GB depending on length and quality.  Generally in order to get a decent download speed you need to be uploading also further increasing data usage.

Good luck with getting good bit torrent performance on Slingshot...

Im not really worried about the time duration to download a large file, my major issue is the huge upload speeds eating into my data cap. If Im getting 20kbs download, but nearly 1000kbs upload, that is a major consumption of data, comparitively speaking.

Im using Free Download Manager for my torrent downloads. But this has minimal options & disabling seeding doesn't even prevent uploads of numerous peers.

Do dedicated torrent programmes have better management of uploading to prevent what I am experiencing?
