I have never heard of an ISP anywhere in the world that guarantees performance and reliably or has a SLA on a residential grade plan.

From the Orcon terms and conditions:

2. SPEED AND QUALITY OF SERVICES

2.1 Your plan speed refers to the maximum possible connection speed. The maximum downstream connection speed will be as fast as your line allows. The stated upstream connection speeds for your plan are the maximum possible speeds only and the actual speed depends on a number of factors and we cannot guarantee that you will achieve your maximum connection speed.

2.2 Orcon Broadband is not guaranteed to be fault free or continuous

You will noticed if you check other ISP's terms they all say a similar thing, that basically residential grade internet is a best effort shared network service.

The reality is you are not paying for ADSL2+ speeds at all and the expectation that you are is completely unrealistic.

You can probably find a provider who's currently offering a better residential service than Orcon right now but there are no guarantees.

If you are not happy with their service why don't you change provider?

The moment Vodafone/Slingshot (or at least, someone competitive) comes into my area, im stuck. Because I have to try and convince the bill-payer (not me, obviously) to change providers.

and unfortunately, the only other provider that can connect ADSL2 in this area is Telecom.. and needless to say, their plans are less than competitive, and I think moving to the unlimited plan would be a bad move since I would get slower speeds anyway.

so its a catch 22

In regards to your first comment.. so does that mean if I connected to a business plan, would they then be promising the speed? or is there special plans that give you guaranteed speeds?

Some business plans offer a service level agreement (SLA) not sure what Orcon offers in this area but in the real world dedicated bandwidth costs hundreds if not thousands per month.

I was editing my posts when to clarify a bit when you replied... but dedicated guaranteed bandwidth costs a lot, this is why ISP's exist in the first place they buy dedicated guaranteed bandwidth then share it out between x users.

Often the contention ratio on bandwidth is 100:1 or 50:1 to make it viable to offer services at the prices they do. Usually this works adequately because not everyone requires the bandwidth at the exact second as everyone else.

Even backhaul from your exchange to your ISP has contention ratios and the bandwidth isn't provisioned 1:1 with the number of users x their sync speed.

ahh okay lol. Im sometimes a little too fast on the reply button.

yeah makes sense.. Maybe i should start looking at something a bit more beefy at our place (if its avaliable). Because our bill is gonna' hit $200 soon (internet + telephone only). I've only really been looking at the major companies. Might be someone who is less advertised thats out here.

The closest analogy is state highways, you have 100 cars going south you don't build a 100 lane highway, you build a 4 lane highway and the cars flow down the highway in an order or queue.

This works fine for general www and email because traffic is intermittent but with the rise of streaming media and people using p2p 24x7 the bandwidth is always consumed and not free for the other users to share. Also latency sensitive applications like gaming or voip really suffer when queued or delayed.

Users will flock to common streaming media and P2P content by the thousands, so just cache all this stuff and then this stuff is domestic content, problem fixed.

Caching servers aren't free or cheap. You are typically talking hundreds of thousands of dollars for hardware and licenses.

Currently with the prices for transit over the southern cross cable having fallen so much bandwidth from cache isn't that much cheaper than real bandwidth.

Nothing is free or cheap, I am sure finding Iggy a band costs money, as for southern cross transit, it is still more expensive then caching, caching is also about the user experiance.

i agree with you tunafish todays people are going to see that ad for iggy and go WTF who's that never heard of him. I'm 40 and i can only remeber a couple of iggy's songs, so sorry Orcon but the money being spent on this garbage would have been better spen on providing users a better experiance and getting ADSL2+ to more places faster evan telecom are ahead of schedule here in Napier just down the road there's a cabinet going in last time i saw these weren't due till october next year

How far are you from the exchange/cabinet? Are you on Orcon+ in an area that recently had a cabinet installed?

You should get more than 1.7Mbit with your attenuation of 49.

Do a line isoloation test, check your filter. If no luck then log a line fault with the helpdesk.

Based off Aussie phonelines but gives you an indercation.

@ Ragnor nope no adsl2+ here mate im in napier and yes cabinets are going in just down the street but as of yet are not live

@ Soundude yup i have one wall socket thats it and the cable to it goes from from the grey bundle cover at the street no stops (am in a block of 3 flats ) and yes i know what i should be able to get
but it's never been able to attain anything near what i should my sync rate goes up if i cycle the modem but within a day it's starts slowing down, i have had it upto 2.9mbps only to check it the next day to find it's gone down to 1.2~1.7 even when the modem is the only thing on the line
