Yip.. Things are different in the EU however. Frequency blocks were sold with only certain technologies permitted. The delay in 900 UMTS in many European Countries has been caused by rules diciating that GSM was the only technology allowed to be used in this band.

Things are changing though - not quite technology neutral (like here and other progressive countries), but liberalised nonetheless. E.g.:

"In October 2009, the Directive
(2009/114/EC) amending the existing GSM Directive, thereby removing the
previous reservation of the 900 MHz band for GSM, was adopted at a European
level. At the same time the European Commission (EC) published a
harmonisation decision designating the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands for
terrestrial electronic communications services, and there is progress to consider
the inclusion of other technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax)."

(From a paper on the website of Comreg, the Irish regulator )

(A number of European countries have already deployed UMTS900 anyway.)

I was chatting with a tech today and he said that they had about 26 of the 100 sites in Wellington with 3g enabled.

I wonder what they have to do to make them 3G enabled. I heard that the sites are all ready for 3g. So why does it take so long? Maybe they have to do something else? I wonder.

Lots of drive testing and optimisation needs to occur. You can't just turn a network on and expect it to work perfectly!

For those who have found the 2degrees 3g network, has anyone had a chance to do a speed test on it?
from 2d's own site they say it supports HSPA+

The 3G network is not yet open to subscribers. It is currently only open to international inbound roamers, and selected staff.

I think when 2degrees launched the new phones with the E63( a phone with 3g) it was confirmed that 3g will definitely have WCDMA soon. Otherwise why would they bother with a 3g E series?

You probably meant "confirmed they will have 3G soon", right? Because "confirmed that 3g will definitely have WCDMA" is redundant at least.

I think he meant that 2d will have WCDMA.

All their base stations are equipped with 3G Antennae and Hardware, they just need to sort each station out individually and this takes time.

I suspect the "3g" was supposed to be "2d". :-)
