Hi all,

Just to clarify some points. The 206,000 people are those who are active subscribers, i.e they have paid and are using/have used the 2degrees network over the last 30 days.
We do not count in this number any person who may have activated their SIM, but have not used it so those "draw sims" some of you mention are not included in this number.
Also with reference to n4s comments above you can't look at mobile subscribers in terms of a market that is 100% penetrated. We are moving towards a market where we can have penetration 500% - with people carrying multiple devices which talk and connect to mobile networks for any number of reasons. Be it a camera where you can upload your snaps via a mobile network to the internet, an e-book, a mobile-wallet device....these are just a few examples.
We're all really pleased and proud of our achievement in such a short period of time.
We look foward to many more exciting milestones and new services in the mix for our customers.

Is your ARPU also based on that same 206k volume or a different number? (the one that Eric Hertz said was 'significantly higher than $10'

i.e. If your active base of 206k has an ARPU of, say, $15, then you would be generating ~$3m revenue this month

The thing about Telecom and Voda's prepaid customers, they all are low volume, Voda I am not so sure about.
The 2D market is higher, from personal experience of people I know who have switched; we all spend from $30-$60 per month, one friend spends $200. I don't care that you can get a better deal with a plan, plans lock you in for 12-24 months. Who want's that?

really? you do know that every single XT plan is available open term, right? (that means no contract)

2degrees is simple.

that's not really the issue I have with the numbers though.

If 2D are getting lots of connections and high ARPUs, and the other providers have continued to grow their connections and revenues, then either:

1) more people have flooded the country and bought mobile phones, thus allowing every player to grow. I think this is unlikely

2) people who alreaydhad a phone now spend considerably more than they did before on their phone bill (which I doubt). Whether that is using one provider, two providers, 1 device or multiple devices doens't matter. they must be spending more now for the numbers to make sense. A lot more. That seems unlikely to me too.

do you and your friends fall into this catagory? That seems pretty wierd. why would you pay more for the same service? (given that I already pointed out that contracts are not compulsory)

The double one rate 50 plan was also 24 months,..

No to mention that I would have to go on to the One Rate 180 @ $79.95 just to get $0.44c calling.

However If I was to use 2D @ $80/mo. I would get an extra 800 FREE text messages and 22c calling to landlines/2degrees...

There is a significant difference between getting a plan open term (which the bulk of their plans are) and signing up to a plan with a term contract to get a free or subsidised handset.

When comparing plans you need to factor in that both Telecom and Vodafone charge per second after the 1st minute on OA plans and Telecom on prepaid plans. This makes it hard to directly compare the number of minutes you can get for a fixed price.

That's why we went back to being simple. :)

One could argue that while rounding all calls up to the next minute is simple (Vodafone are simple also!) it's not offering the customer the best value for money! :-)

It depends who you call. We like you to not have to stop and consider a) what day is it, b) what time is it and c) who am i about to call before you pick up the phone. If the answers to those questions are wrong then 44c/min min/min looks a whole lot better.

This issue of rounding is a bit of a red herring. It mainly comes into play where your call is between 1 and 2 minutes long, or between 2 and 3 minutes long:

- For calls less than one minute, all carriers charge for one minute flat
- For calls of 3 minutes upwards, the difference price for an extra minute is down to 25%, which makes it not that significant

OK, so if I make a call just over one minute long, 2D is charging me 88c, just over 3 minutes long, 2D is charging me $1.32 i.e. just under 66c per minute.

Both of those rates are still less than the 89c per minute Telecom or Voda charge prepay customers, and statistically, how many calls would fall into those exact time slots? It would be interesting to see some research on this, but I know I make many calls that are less than one minute long, and I make others that are 5 minutes or more.

So ... I think that this rounding argument is a fallacious one at best.

Comparing 44 cent calling prepay 2 Degrees to XT prepay 89 cents.

Less then 1 minute 2 Degress cheaper

After 1 minute and under 2 88 cents still cheaper then 89 cents Plus per second charge.

If knock off round 17 cents off 89 cents XT because way they do top ups makes 72 cents minute, still dearer then 2 degrees when calling non 2 degrees mobile in first minute. (Doesn't complete at all with landlines and 2 degrees mobile & land line calling 22 cents)

After 1 minute per second charging cross's 88 cents just after 13 seconds, so call with have to finish within 13 seconds after 1 minute to be cheaper then 2 degrees.

At 2 min 2 degrees $1.32, XT at 72 cents $1.44 and cost going up by the second, where as 2 degrees $1.32 lasts until 3rd minute entered into.

With my above numbers used in costs, there's only 13 seconds period of time, that XT is cheaper then 2 degrees on prepaid, and then if calls are landlines or on network mobile calls within month top up then there is zero seconds XT cheaper.
