insane: I would imagine that Orcon and any other ISP in NZ for that matter still have enough unused IPv4 space they they are in no short term danger of running out. APNIC was allocated another /8 not so long ago so there should be a fair bit around still to come.

I may be wrong but as far as I know only Vocus offer IPv6 international connectivity, and they do dual stack v4 and v6 so it does put a constraint on your connectivity options.

I for one am not looking forward to providing an IP address over the phone, specially if not in the shortened form.

Why would you provide an IP over the phone? I imagine in the future you'll do other things (visit a webpage which logs details for the helpdesk, use a DNS entry, send an email) - plus with there being enough IP addresses for the entire globe, in theory you'll have static IP's for everything.

Even your fridge .... ;-)

Thats what DNS is for :)

If only you could use DNS for everything. You really don't always want to be relying on DNS for some things.

I was thinking of routing and firewall setups

So if I get IPv6 compatible CPE (currently using the Siemens Gigaset that Orcon leases me) then I can get IPv6 connectivity? That'd be awesome, since my webhost gave me 16 quadrillion IPv6 addresses with my server, and what better way to lock down the management then to only allow it over an IP protocol that six ISPs worldwide offer, and only on the 7,457,541,201,102nd IP address.

I'm running my internal network and the CPE on IPv6, but I can't ping6 any IPs outside my net yet.

With the recent announcement that APNIC have now triggered the last assignments of IPv4 space, and have indicated in several parts of their announcement, that the bulk of remaining IP addresses won't last long (several months, while the last /8 will be split into smallish chunks lasting a couple of years)) and are hence saying that the priority is now to move onto IPv6...

What's the current (updated) status of Orcon IPv6/DSL deployment. Looking at it, IPv6 for Colo seems pretty much standard (based on recent posts here) but IPv6 for ADSL based customers is a little bit more secretive.

From what I can tell, CPE wise, there is a lot more than previously mentioned that support IPv6, and Dynalink seem to have a few updated firmware images in the making. So what can a Orcon ADSL customer expect in the near future?

Is there any further advance on IPv6 for co-located customers ... given the space evaporating so quickly now, I'm going to have to up-skill RSN I think ...
