Hi all,

Just to address some scuttlebutt here around 3G. I certainly never made the link to 3G and the launch of our retail stores. This was an assumption made by the reporter and you know what they say about making an assumption....
We're really happy with how our 3G network is progressing. We've had staff on it for sometime testing and giving feedback and rest assured the feedback is all good.
Salty is right we've also been testing out the microsim on devices such as the ipad and running them off 3G...purring along.
Mauricio will be able to have a play shortly and will consequently be able let you know all about it before we open it up to everyone.
I know the next question is "When will that be?". Well, at this stage I can say it that it'll be sooner rather than later.

Stay tuned!!

Cheers

But that is just like saying next year is sooner than 2 years away or that the moon is closer than the sun... could be about 6 months still.

Rubbish! The only reason it looks that way is because we turned the Sun down to save energy.

Kids these days...

ah-ha! you admit it!

I just hope that 2degrees time estimates/exaggerations are no where near as bad as the other guys.

3G!!

I was at a cafe in Christchurch today and saw my HTC G2 showing the 3G connection sign (while connected to the 2Deg network) so I downloaded an Android speed test app and it reported a download speed of 520Kbits

Back on Edge now :(

My free 3 months of BB Lite (100MB per month) on Vodafone expires in early August. I was hoping 3G would correspond with the 1y anniversary of the 2degrees launch, so that I could switch back to 2degrees at that time.

However time is running short on that now, if they were to meet that target then we should have been starting to see some promotional material on that by now. I still don't believe that a pre-requisite of the 3G launch are on-account plans, so I'm not taking the lack of any news on those as a sign that 3G is coming later rather than earlier.

Yes but it is my understanding that there is network issues, they don't want another XT. You have seen how people got into Telecom over that one. Imagine if they gained 200,000 customers in 3 months and it was not up to standard....

Hi SteveON,

Just to clarify a misconception you have... we have no network issues. The optimisation and testing of our 3G network is all going according to plan. We're very happy.

Thanks

I just noticed my 2degress phone is showing 3G (Linwood, Christchurch),  so called the wife (New Brighton Christchurch) and her 2 degrees phone is also showing 3G coverage, I rung her back and confirmed video-calling is working too.

Something happening.

Last week I was on Hereford St, Christchurch, checking out Geekzone on my mobile of course, and noticed a 3.5G icon on my Nokia N95. Yes, a 3.5G icon, not a 3G icon I've previously seen back in the day on VFNZ. I quickly found some random mobile speed test site and got about 500kbps. Few minutes later I 'lost' reception and my phone reconnected at the usual EDGE speed with a little 'E' icon I usually see.

2degrees are definitely up to something in CHC!

On the contrary, given they supposed have something in the region of 200k+ active connections (lets say 250k by now) then the user per cell will be very low in comparison to Vodafone (the other 2100MHz 3G provider) and the performance will likely be significantly better than the competition when on their home network.
