Voting for "best isp" in NZ is like voting for the most attractive leper.

They're all useless.

Telecoms in this country is an embarrassment. Look at the current iphone debacle.

Perhaps when orcon start to put gear in the cabinets to serve a majority of people it will matter that they are unbundling, but for now they are only getting customers who are trapped within the "10 megabit" range of the exchange, not those getting the nicer 20 meg speeds off a cabinet.

Instead of paying exorbitant amounts of the cash we pay Orcon every month on stupid ads perhaps it would be better to spend it on buying the extra bandwidth to cope with peak time congestion and keeping the customer base they have happy about what they're getting for the amount they pay (which by the way is not cheap)

hmmm I'm on a cabinet and I certainly do not get 20Mbps heck i don't even get 15Mbps and i doubt I'll see any orcon equipment in the cabinet just down the road anytime soon or within the next 10yr's

Then look at your internal wiring, the cabinets serve such small areas each that you should be up at about 20, if they would lower the noise margin more like 22-24. Noone is more than about a km from a cabinet, where as there are people up to about 3km from exchanges that are not lucky enough to be getting a cabinet installed so are stuck on 11-13 meg type speeds, or less if their wiring is crap.

vodafone and telecom have no controal over iphones, its all on apple, i guess so many people want one that they've ran out. Not the phone company's fult, they just provide the service.

I'm one of those unlucky ones that is not quite far away from the exchange to get cabinetised. I've just redone the wiring and am getting about 9Mbps down now, probably as good as it's gunna get for some time I imagine. Kinda frustrating to know that if I live another street further away from the exchange I'd probably be getting faster speeds via the cabinet. Oh well.

Yeah, kinda makes a joke of the 10 meg zones.

How old is some of the cable in the ground that goes back to the cabinets from the pillars in the street? Someone I spoke to said that most was replaced in the ealy 80s just before telecom became telecom, and because of policics they didnt pay to put ducts in which is why we are in this mess now. Not sure how true that is tho.
