Dual-Sim phone coming to 2degrees

Vodafone operates a GSM (2G) mobile phone network at 900MHz and 1800MHz and a UMTS (3G) network at 900MHz and 2100MHz. They state that the network provides service in "around 97% of New Zealanders live, work and play"

Telecom Mobile is New Zealand's second-largest mobile operator, with less than 50% of market-share, slightly behind Vodafone.[31] Telecom used to operate AMPS, Digital D-AMPS/TDMA and currently operates CDMA2000. AMPS and D-AMPS service was sold under the 025 brand and CDMA services are sold under the 027 brand. Telecom turned off the 025 network on 31 March 2007. Most of its customers had migrated to the 027 network. The 027 CDMA EV-DO network is marketed as T3G, a 2 MB third-generation mobile system.

Telecom announced a plan on 8 June 2007 to build a W-CDMA/UMTS network,[22] to be called XT Mobile Network, based on the WCDMA HSPA technology, to replace its current CDMA EV-DO network. The network was launched on 30 May 2009. All their cell sites provide service at 850 MHz with some 3G 2100 MHz overlay in urban areas to serve inbound roaming customers with 2100 MHz only phones. Telstra's Next G (in Australia) and AT&T Wireless also have networks running on 850 MHz. 850 MHz services can cover greater geographic distances and penetrate buildings more effectively than higher frequencies. The new Telecom network has no GSM coverage, which means there is no service for 2G only phones.

Current CDMA phones are guaranteed by Telecom to work until at least June 2012.

2degrees was formerly known as NZ Communications and previously as Econet Wireless. Planning began in 2000 but details were not revealed until 11 May 2009 and pricing was announced a day before launch. The company provides GSM 900 MHz (and, in selected areas, 1800 MHz) services on its own cellular network, it also now offers a mobile broadband on their newly created 2100 MHz network for a very cheap rate compared to Telecom and Vodafone.

2degrees is the only mobile provider in New Zealand which offers EDGE, meaning users with compatible 2G mobiles can access data services up to 4 times faster.[6] 2degrees has just introduced a UMTS (W-CDMA) 2100 MHz 3G service with HSPA+ in August 2010. The network has hundreds of cell sites installed, which has cost approximately NZ$250 million to develop.[7]

Which means that the freqencies used are:

  Telecom 850Mhz (2G and T3G) 2100Mhz (3G)
  Vodafone 900Mhz (2G) 1800Mhz (2.5G) 2100Mhz (3G)

Notice that Vodafone and 2Degrees both use the same frequencies, which allows these networks to interchange their handsets.
