That little bit about the license escaped my attention. Does this mean that 2Degrees is refusing to provide service to those of us who because of disability can't drive?

savag3: In relation to them requiring a drivers license - they may have a big problem if I have interpreted it correctly.
Telecommunications Information Privacy Code 2003 (Page 25 of pdf)
Rule 12 - Unique Identifiers
(4) A telecommunications agency must not require an individual to disclose any
unique identifier assigned to that individual unless the disclosure is for one of the
purposes in connection with which that unique identifier was assigned or for a
purpose that is directly related to one of those purposes.

A drivers license number comes under the definition of unique identifier. The Privacy Commissioner has dealt with a similar matter recently:
Case Note 200062 [2010] NZ PrivCmr 6 : Woman complains about mobile phone company taking a photocopy of her driver's licence

My interpretation of all this is that they can ask you for your drivers license details but it must be voluntary - they can require you to show them your license but they can't record the details or make a copy of the license unless you consent.

They're asking for a license for the purpose of conducting a credit check, with your consent (it'll be in the contract you agree to).  Since that isn't for the purpose of opening the account, it should be fine provided they do not retain that information once they've used it for the purpose they obtained it.  Essentially, you're giving the details to Veda, not them.  It's common practice.

Totally. $45 per month with 50mb of data isn't even competitive. Sort it out 2Degrees!

It seems to me that this plan is excellent for those who do high volumes of calling, but not that flash for people like me who do reasonably low volumes of calls and texts but require a bit of data.

I love this new plan! Man geeks can be a whingeing bunch. With a 1gb data addon, this cuts my Voda plan price in half! Who needs more than 1gb on your phone?! 220 mins, 600 txts, 1gb of data for $59? That's bloody competitive! PLUS rollover minutes, and no contract?!

Good work 2degrees, I'm switching!!

Is 2degrees going to release a monthly data plan or are they keeping data prepay only ?

You have to take you hats off to 2degrees, the whole unused minutes thing is likely to keep you locked into your pay monhtly plan. while its not contract it pretty much is. eg if you only used 80% of your allocated minutes (annd according to the herald 70% of people never use their allocated minutes)and they rolled over each and every month, after 6 months you'd have a good bulk of minutes sitting thre to be used up. I doubt anyone would give them up just to switch providers let alone stop paying PAY MONTHLY for the next month. (I assume you'd loose your unused minutes if you stopped paying for the next month) So while its a great product, someone in 2degrees has done some great thinking on this to in fact lock you into a contract.

SaltyNZ:

My only gripe is having to buy the 50MB every month, and having to do so multiple times if I am going to use more than 50Mb in a given month. Admittedly it's only a minor hassle, but it takes away some of the convenience of being on account.

Well, you could buy a broadband bundle instead if you prefer...

Doesn't help if you live outside Akl/wlg/chch tho..

I am contemplating switching the two mobiles I have with Vodafone, but one of the mobiles I pay for is still under contact and would cost me $160 to break.

Although I did receive an email from 2D a while ago saying something about they are looking into covering the cost of my termination fees... I might have to dig that email back up.

I agree that it would be good to have some data included.

I would actually like to see mobile plans moving towards how they do it in aussie - instead of getting a certain number of minutes, texts, etc, you get a dollar value.

I've been living in Melbourne for the past year (just got back to nz) and could pay $20 a month for about $150 of credit to use any way I want. Add on a 250mb data plan for $10 and your laughing.

The Australian Plans create confusion and this is why you "think" they are vastly better... Sure you get the crazy bonus deals but did you know the charge 99c/min + 40c Call Connection?

So lets say you pay $39 you get from $250 worth of credit and unlimited on-net calling + 200mb
That is only about 250 min of calling... BUT this does not include the call connection fee.

I have to agree that it should have included 50MB data as part of the plan.

Also I'd like to see some capped international calling like Vodafone. At the moment all our AU and UK calls are made on VF with the $2/hr cap
