neoprint:
richms: The nokia 1100 was IMO the best of the cheap nokias that just make phonecalls and sms.

I fully agree, I loved my 1100. Would go a solid fortnight off the one charge with lots of use. I miss it but I'm not sure if I could go back to it now :(

The Nokia 1110i was also a good entry level phone.

Zach:
savag3: The Nokia 1616 is in this price range and I when I had a look at one seemed pretty decent for a calling and SMS only phone.
Same phone (1616 has a speaking clock, 1800 has FM radio), different case. They share the same?User Guide.

I have used the 1616 and it's the same (actually, I should have used 1616 in the title because that's what 2 degrees is selling currently but they list the 1800 on their site...)?

the 1800 has a speaking clock

Okay thanks I can't update my post now, but that means the 1800 is a slightly better phone with the added FM radio.

Scratch that. The 1616 does have built-in FM radio.

So it's just the function of the asterisk (*) key that changes.

Really? It has the same problems right? Does it take 3 seconds to load the Inbox? I suppose this wouldn't bother a lot of people but when you've come from a basic 5-year-old phone that fairs better, it doesn't make much sense. When did tech start going backwards?

I just checked the 1616 now, and currently it takes ~7s to open the inbox list, ~3s to open the message ~7s to exit the message, and going through the message list lags.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of expecting to be able to edit messages.

On mine that is not the worst problem, often when searching for messages i will type 5 to find all contacts with j in the name but for no reason it will type k or l or sometimes 5 and will lag for a good 3-4 seconds before i can delete that letter and retype it.

Also the delay before moving to the next digit varys a lot on the dirt cheap nokia I tried, sometimes quickly like it should, sometimes close to a second so you end up turning your B than an A into a C

I couldn't type letters to find contacts either. I think a factory reset fixed this. Some setting must have disabled letters by default... Mine still lags though, even with the pointless icons removed and different display settings.

Solved.

Move the contacts off the SIM (don't know why I didn't try this earlier). Lag is created when the phone accesses the SIM contact list.
