Everyone 'should' know to never use data when roaming- unless your business has authorised and are paying for it, or you are rich enough not to care.

You are just lucky your charges are not higher, some people end up owing many thousands.

Pay the bill , and consider this a cheap lesson.

It's way past time the telcos should have sorted this out too. If the $2 dollar shop made the same margins as roaming providers, they'd need to change their name to the $200 shop.

Ouch!  Even if I could rely on my Telco to cap my Internet use when roaming, I could never get myself to spend $250 on data. I would get a local SIM card (as another has noted) and stick my 2D SIM into another phone for those who wanted to call me and didn't know I was out of the country.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Just for future use, Mapquest is free on android and uses open maps you can get anywhere..

I would be a bit upset too if they didn't stop at the credit limit. That's what it's for!

gjm: props to 2degrees rep guy for taking an interest, regardless of outcome I say. That kind of service is becoming rarer  and rarer ....(not affiliated with 2degrees in anyway by the way)

what makes you say that?  I would say it is becoming more and more common.  go back 3 years and try and find any NZ telco responding to requests through forums. it was rare as hens teeth back then, but now virtually eveyr request on the voda, telecom, 2D etc forums gets answered by a rep from their company

Well, not the ones that get resolved by a forum member within minutes.  No need for action in those cases.

But you are a good example of what I am talking about.   How many problem threads did Vodafone used to respond to on here back in, say, 2008?  Did they even have a person who’s job it was to do that sort of thing?

Heck, I’ve even seen you respond to help threads on 2D and Telecom threads.

no doubt, and that is exactly my point.

this sort of service isn't becoming rarer and rarer,  it's becoming far more common, which is a great thing.

Well you could be right. Having been in the UK 3 years ago I am now very jaded when it comes to customer service and am always impressed by companies that seem to go the extra mile. Coming from London, customers are an inconvenience to be tolerated only because they seem to be necessary in some way. Anyway....back on topic....

2degrees are kindly looking into it for me.

It looks like despite the set $250 credit limit they dont disconnect data service until the end of a data session and it was let to run on freely thereby exceeding the supposed limit.

There is also meant to be a txt message which I also didn't receive advising that the limit has been reached.

Hoping for a good outcome.

It needs to be noted that John is here largely of his own free will and often in his own time, he isn't a Vodafone CSR that has been assigned to GZ. Same applies to Salty to a degree, and Neal R from Telecom (I'm sure there are others but these are the ones I know personally.)

We are lucky to have these guys, if they were to "leave" there is no guarantee they would be replaced here by their companies.

jjnz1: What he really should have done is disable 3G data on his phone, buy a portable Mifi device with a local sim, and connect to it using his phones Wifi.

You could even go one step further and upgrade your phone to Gingerbread and use the integrated VOIP tool for free/cheap calling.

SORTED!

I just upgraded to Gingerbread on my N1, mainly for that integrated VOIP.  It works very well and will come in handy.

I'd love to see a breakdown of roaming charges.
What percentage gets put down as the roaming providers cost, the local provider back home's cost, and then how much goes in their pockets each as straight profit.

I imagine the large charge and the majority of the money goes to the overseas provider providing the roaming service.
