darkcon: dialup speed, 5.6kbyte/s an hour before the first post, and what made me start doing tests, was getting 4.8kb/s off a rift update server while my friend next door to me is getting 710kb/s on telstra

was Ignoring due to stupid question attempting to troll.

Not a single one of your tests shows anything like dialup speed. Comparing an update from an overseas server to what you think you should get is laughable.

I note you've still avoided clarifying what you expect Slingshot to deliver in terms of performance.

In essence, I agree that Slingshot's performance is one of the most variable available, and the peak hour performance isn't great, but you're not paying for anything better, so just switch and stop whinging. You won't make them provision any more bandwidth, and anyone with a brain is already aware that you get what you pay for.

Apart from venting your frustration, I don't see what you're trying to accomplish... What you have done in your first post though is mislead people into thinking that Slingshot is providing worse than dialup performance for $90/month. By your own offered speedtests, this isn't the case.

Cheers - N

Actually no, he wasn't. I can see the mixture of speeds around there. But back to sbiddle's question, how are the line stats looking?

I wonder how many people will have to explain to this guy how residential internet works before he accepts reality.

You are getting what you paid for ie: "budget" quality performance from a "cheap and nasty" ISP.

If you aren't happy CHANGE ISP, this will undoubtedly mean you might pay a bit more per month but you will likely get much better peak time performance.

Interesting comment. The topic title is "Getting what you pay for? I'm not, time to test!"

Now, I'm paying $200 a month for broadband with TelstraClear and I do get what I pay for ;)

darkcon: I've been getting this for months, and almost as bad for 2 years (1.5mbps on a good day), despite knowing "my line" can handle a hell of alot more than what sling shots been giving me

worse than dialup on a 90$ a month plan? you bet

I'll be posting the pics/data on the fatmans forums so to not pic spam this forum
(sorry for the offsite link, I'll be linking back to this post on them tho)

http://fatmansrepair.t15.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12&p=13#p13

In 6-10 days I'll be changing from Slingshot, to Telstraclear, no changes to the physical phone line, no changes in router/filter/computer/software, just a change of ISP, and see what happens

Keeping in mind Slingshot offers me Full speed, defined as the max my line can handle

And telstra clear, has also given me the same quote

Lets find out who is the liar, I've been told over the phone I'm getting the max my line can handle, I have my doubts.

I'll be running speed tests every 6-12 hours to somewhere(Random) in the usa, Cali USA, and adelade australia and posting results until my Telstra gets connected then do the same amount of tests for the same number of days for telstra

If you're interested in the results, follow along, consider doing the same test before you change ISP

Are you on that 'unlimited' or 'all you can eat' plan. If you are, I believe the bandwidth is 'managed' which may affect speeds. But yes, you are getting what you paid for.

Nah its Full speed/Full speed 25gig cap plan

Was also as bad on Fullspeed/256k plan

pretty decent on my old 512/256 plan, fast speeds than I get now, but that was quite a few years ago

Line stats, are in the link in my first post, check the link

That server is dead. The database is not working. You should post all information including images here instead.

Compared my connection in every way to telstra, xtra, and orcon connections of the same type, to servers etc downloaded at the same time

at what point can you say 22kb/s is good for a 7mbps line? specially when its advertised full speed its appauling.

My tests are tests for the speed over time, none of them are surposed to show any dialup speed, they are showing how horrible it is, and that its not even close to acceptable, under anyones standards.

the dialup speed I got one night was only what started me on this testing thing/changing isp, last straw as it were.

Unless you can say the speeds in those tests are even mildly acceptable, piss off, you're just looking to argue, and failing at it.

As for what I'm trying to accomplish, is the same thing as A person who goes to a fast food joint, and gets a bug in his burger, Getting the word out so people eat somewhere else :P

I'm ok with peak performance not being great, I've been ok with the sub par/bad speeds the last 2 years, but when JPG's load in layers...yes layers, like back in 1995, thats not acceptable in any way.

My point is, they false advertise, don't use them, they blow chunks.

Well, as far as that point goes, I'd agree I'm certainly not in the same class as yourself when it comes to arguing.

What happens with your plan when you exceed your data cap? Are you throttled?

However, this conversation is pointless, unless you have escalated through to management about your BW issues, you can either stop whining and move, or stop whining :)

So if you both do a speed test to the same location at the same time, do you get differing results?

Also, with the speed tests posted, you realise that 0.33Mbps is the same as 330Kbps?  That would mean the speed test is a lot faster than dialup.  When you say the speed is slower than dialup, is that when you are downloading from other locations (as in you are not refering to the speedtests?) - Just trying to clear things up is all.

Well, at my work we are on a Gbps dark fibre connection from Snap and these are my results:

https://www.speedtest.net/result/1235090578.png 1.03 D/L 0.59 U/L, to Palo Alto.

And thats on a $1k+ connection with prioritised traffic over residential class customers and you think you have it bad on your little $90/month plan on your copper twisted pair?

As others have already clarified - no ISP will ever guarantee bandwidth/preformance unless you pay for a dedicated link.

Although I will also add - I use Snap at home as well (ex-employee) and they have got to be one of, if not the best for residential services, whilst very competivly priced and excellent service.
