i guess what i was trying to get at is that snap should install their own 3g stuff and have data counted in/towards the internet monthly plan, even if the plans was $10/m more it would still pay itself off

AND

yes we know the cost factor but im sure when being the best provider out there you would have no real issues in recovering the cost plus some in a short time.

Great, business case done on Snap's behalf. I personally would be surprised if Snap are not out now installing their own 3g data network.. that $10 extra month (from what, potentially a few thousand customers) is going to easily cover the costs of building a multi-million dollar 3g network, paying for daily running cost, maintenance and upgrades.

Infact, because it is so easy I am really amazed everyone is not doing it! (better not let Orcon, WXC and SlingShot etc. know)

Cell towers are not repeaters at all not even close, Have you tired to purchase some 3G spectrum lately?

define what the cell phone towers are, and their job.

A cell tower 3G / 2G is connected back to the Core network elements over a transmission path IuB eg (IP , ATM , Microwave) and connects to elements like MSC , BSC , RNC , GGSN and the list goes on

For a mobile repeater (RF AMP) only talks to the serving cell to improve signal in a smaller area like in building coverage

Radio spectrum is a finite resourse. This means it's physically impossible for it to offer the same network capacity as a fixed line network. Simple economics and market forces tell us that something that is

a) fininte and
b) convenient or delivering to new markets

will always be able to attract a price premium.

But if each customer pays $10 extra on top of the prices which already probably don't have huge margins there wont be many customers paying the $10 because its 'too expensive' and suddenly the billions aren't rolling in.

Lets assume that we have 100% of the Chch base with a $10 plan, 110 towers will be about 11Mill Plus the network and infrastructure back end, putting it about 20Mil to service Chch...

Let's work on a 10% margin, assuming that we are not making losses on the $10 plan... That's a profit of $340,000 per month. That's pretty sweet; they will get their investment back in 58 months or 4.9 years.

Trolling away...

I can do math. Note: My estimates are way out!

Not sure, I spoke to MED and 112 was the number of sites another provider had put in to cover Christchurch. I was researching building a data only or voice+data network in Christchurch as part of the spectrum auctions. I don't have access to my research docs any more so can't be more specific.
