miamiheatfan: After we've downloaded the game. How do we make sure that when playing the game it plays off the Orcon server and is unmetered ?

It is pretty easy all the Orcon servers will have Orcon in the name. Here is a full list: http://games.orcon.net.nz/?page=serverbrowser

Just out of interest - how far along is the content server from downloading all of the catalogue? Lots of games on my list still wont download from orcon yet.

It has about 2.5TB out of 6TB.
So quite away.

It's pretty much running as fast as it can, Valve have some limitations when it comes to populating new content servers.

I thought I was getting zero rated traffic due to the banner but then a nice 5 gig value popped up in my daily usage this morning! I guess I got 2/3 games free. It might be best to wait till the server is fully populated before downloading.

Told my boys that Steam was free now and they have been happily updating games and downloading. My usage meter shows only 19 megs of free usage. Damn.

Have installed Steamwatch but have no idea what IP's we need to put in for Orcon's servers.

This is one case of Orcon advertising a product without a) resources to support it and b) instructions on how to get the benefit that it advertises. "Orcon offers free Steam" should not come with obscure instructions on how to get it. The end user does not need to understand how the Steam content servers work - it just wants zero rated traffic - as advertised.

The other case is the Genius Product. That's balls up after balls up.

Both are breaches of the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act. The Commerce Commission and any one of the two consumer tv programs may be interested?

Very odd that they advertised it before making sure their content server had all the games. They must have known it was going to catch a lot of people out.

It's a fair comment. I tried those steam filtering programs but I guess I configured them wrong and I was not able to download anything from anywhere for a while. It seems that actually getting onto the Orcon steam servers to download is extremely haphazard and not too easy for the average end user.

All my Steam data has been zero-rated however it is the more popular products (and older) such as Counterstrike, Left 4 Dead 2 etc.

As for the "breach" of consumer law blah blah, they do state this :

"Important note: data from the Orcon Steam Content Server will be unmetered for Orcon customers. However, if you download from another Steam server, this usage will be charged. To check that you are downloading from the Orcon server click ?play? on the game you are downloading and check that the Orcon Games banner is displayed."

Orcon have clearly stated here and in their own forum that not all games are available yet, theres 6TB of data to come through and if Valve decide to limit what games or even speed the games come through to Orcon at, is not Orcons fault.

Patience is required - the wait will be worth it.

Hi XPD, I'm not going to go into debate on this forum about legal issues but will say that to the "average" person, who is the target of the recent push to get customers (Genius is smart and easy, just plug it and away you go etc), the headline advertising may be seen as misleading, which is in breach of section 6.1 of the Fair Trading Act. Similar to getting someone into a store for a special offer but there are conditions attached to the purchase.

Whilst Orcon quantify that one should check that the "Orcon Games Banner" is displayed it does not give any instruction on how you check this.

Cheers

Perhaps you are using Opera 11.5? So change to another browser or go to your profile and disable the rich text editor option.

There's a fix. Whining is not a fix.

That's an interesting comment. TelstraClear is also making its own Steam content server available, but they have been very careful to not make it accessible until they have all content loaded.

Nope, theirs is up too, and from what I understand also not full.
http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

It's going to take over a month to fully populate the >6TB required for a full catalog.  It automagically starts serving what content it has.  I guess we could tell Valve to completely filter it until it's finished, but then imagine the fallout from people wanting it *right now*.
