Currently with Orcon who charge a lot more but do really have excellent internet speeds....but all this data at this price is tempting..

Does anyone use usenet here? am curious on speeds from astraweb at various times of the day if possible.
On orcon I can max out my connection any time of the day with astraweb...
(on a capped plan on slingshot i mean)

usenet would be considered as a bulk downloading system and you will get about around 30kBps - 100kBps some report up to 300kBps with full line speed outside the free data periods.

I don't know how the new plans will act with network load, congested times expect to see the slower speeds.

Sorry to ask a silly question, but does anyone know if you can change to the new plans without the contract?

my dad would change if there was no contract,  i realise we wouldn't get the half price for 6 months deal but its still cheaper and more cost effective than what we have now.

Yes you can change without resigning to a new contract.

just confirmed for existing customers under contract, your contract wont be extended after switching to the new plans.

Have been thinking about changing. Am currently on a 40gb plan paying $96/month

Looking at the 150gb plan for $101 was told I would get the 50% off broadband (drops it to $71) for 6 months if I resign for 12 months

It's tempting not really using the off peak anyway

Any idea if Usenet speeds would be better on their 250GB plan than the AYCE plan? My workmate is getting horrenous speeds currently (1-3kb/s) and is looking at changing if it is going to improve.

I don't know, it may be better but Slingshot will still do its prioritizing of bulk downloading.
If you want a faster network then maybe Snap is what your looking for, they have some pretty good plans and a cheap free data period offer also.

On my slingshot plan 25gig naked DSL I can max out my line during Onpeak and get 400-500KB/s offpeak with Usenet.
If I switched to this new plan do you think I would experience slow downs on my usenet?

Is it worthwhile switching to the 250GB plan?

I'm currently on the "All You Can Eat" Plan but I'm experiencing speed issues especially during the evening.

YouTube and just web browsing isn't affected, it's mostly to do with XBOX Live gaming.

As games (like COD) run on Listen/P2P servers, games can have latency problems due to a poor host.
But the odd thing is that I get host due to a high upload speed so everyone in my lobby (including friends) get affected by sudden lag spikes due to Slingshot slowing down my connection.

I am considering switching the a higher capped plan (but with no restrictions on speed) but I need to get some opinions whether it's the best choice. I normally use alot of data due to gaming and watching a few YouTube vids.

 Cheers.

nyquist:
You need to not be under a current contract *and* have your home line with Slingshot. Was just told this when I switched over so I didn't get the 50% deal.

I'm not sure whether they changed things or there was simply a miscommunication. Based on the fact some people were told it's not valid for existing customers without a contract despite this not being true, I'm guessing the later. However I had no problem getting the promotion price (they actually give a credit equivalent to the amount you'd save) despite having no homeline with them. The no existing contract part is required. Since they offer the promotion price to new customers without a homeline, it seems a bit odd they'd exclude existing customers without a homeline but allow ones with a homeline anyway.

If you missed the promotion because you were told it wasn't valid if you didn't have a homeline, I'd call them up and politely ask them about it.

BTW as a note to all, remember the promotion ends today.

Thanks for the heads up. I called them again about this and only new customers can get it without the homeline. Existing customers need to be out of contract and with a homeline.

Also, it must have been busy today because I tried calling three times.

Sorry to hear that. I definitely got it despite being an existing customer without contract and not having the home line and have the credit in my account right now (it was 50% off the total price in other words 50% off the $5.00 you pay each for no homeline & no tolls as well). I should clarify I don't have home line or tolls, I guess it's possible for some odd reason they don't offer it to people with tolls but no homeline but do offer it to people without homeline or tolls but seems unlikely.

More likely either I just got lucky or you kept getting unlucky. Did you mention the homeline bit to them? I understand it may have been necessary because of the problems before but it perhaps didn't help since it may not be something it occurred to them to check by themselves ;-) (Perhaps since I didn't have homeline or tolls they didn't notice since my prices were $10 higher rather then the $5 higher?)

No problems with it being busy for me but I called at like 9 am :-) (Well I did get put on hold for a while when the person checked about when I could change plan.)

Hey, no worries. Thanks again for the heads up regarding this. It's very odd and inconsistent though and I would really like them to clarify.

The first time I called, I didn't mention the homeline bit as I wasn't aware of it, and it was the CSR who informed me I needed the homeline to be able to get the promotion. So I switched plans and left it as that. The second time I asked for clarification regarding whether a homeline was needed and was told the same thing - a homeline was necessary.

I was probably at a busy period, because the queue seemed to take a while and at one point I was waiting for 30 - 40 minutes. Definitely not an experience I'd like to repeat.
